*The Mandalorian and Grogu*, the first film in the *Star Wars* franchise in seven years, was the highest-grossing movie in the US and Canada over the four-day holiday weekend with $102 million in ticket sales.

The performance compares with estimates of at least $100 million from industry tracker Boxoffice Pro. Although it would be considered a strong start for any other big-budget release, it’s among the lowest debuts for a *Star Wars* picture since franchise-owner Lucasfilm was acquired by Walt Disney Co. in 2012.

Directed by Jon Favreau, *The Mandalorian and Grogu* follows the adventures of bounty hunter Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and a young acolyte named Grogu — colloquially known as Baby Yoda. It’s the first *Star Wars* film to be shot entirely in California, aided by $22 million in state tax credits.

It’s wild that $100 million isn’t enough for these uber corps. Also, why not make a Mando and Grogu tie in game. What happened to the tie-in game Jerry!

It’s Sunday morning. The weekend is barely half over.

With a budget of $165 million, it’s gonna make a nice profit. Maybe not a hefty profit, but a nice one. Star Wars may still be the king of all film franchises, and I still like the Disney Star Wars films (except Rise of Skywalker), and I hope they keep making them. But the reality is that SW can’t keep making megagiant $10 billion dollar profits over individual films anymore. Even if every one of them were as high quality as ESB or Rogue One, they wouldn’t make that kind of money.

The sheer amount of money that Disney put into these projects means the pressure to make any kind of profit is so much worse.

If they focused more on building better stories and not diluting brands to a point where nobody cares, they might have better luck.

Honestly, I found even marvel movies were a total chore by the time the most recent movie came out. Disney did an amazing job of just making me not care. They gave me nothing to look forward to and no reason to watch them.

Another annoying aspect is they will blame literally everyone but the people who make these stupid decisions and set out these ludicrous budgets.

    5. It’s quite enjoyable.

People are acting like a longer, bigger budget Mandalorian episode is a bad thing, so I can only assume they didn’t like the show in the first place.

I don’t go anymore. Why would I? It’s unbelievably expensive and it’ll be streaming on a platform I’ve already paid for in a month.

I saw Grogu toys on sale for 50% off already last time I was at target which I’m sure is a promising sign.

Disney killed off their once famous fan base. The old timers have been burned too many times by bad product, new potential fans just don’t care enough to fork over the billions that Star Wars used to get. It’s a sad thing.

Grogu merchandise is probably going to fly off shelves again. That little guy is basically unstoppable at this point.

Wow im shocked just bc it will be on disney very soon so i dont see the point. But i forgot about the die hard Star Wars fans if you show it they will come

    11. Why’s this thread acting like 100 million in a debut is a bad thing. It’ll make its budget and profit in the first week lmao

    12. It genuinely seems like it’s never going to happen, but it would be so amazing if Disney would realize that there are so many Star wars fans that would love to explore the dark side. Yes I get it. Disney is for children, but it also has a loyal and obsessive fanbase base that would eat that shit up. They are way too obsessed with making Star wars all about children when in today’s media environment you could easily segment the two. Exhausting being a star wars fan.

I loved Star Wars… mostly before Disney, I still like the brand. However I have no idea who or what a mandalorean is. So much content has been flooded into the market I gave up trying.

I liked it. It was a extended TV movie, which is what I was expecting anyway

I feel like “film” should be in quotation marks.
First four episodes of a TV show maybe

As time goes on I long for what could have been if The Last Jedi wasn’t immediately canned and reversed for whatever slop this is

I think this was a huge win for Disney. They were going to make this into a season of tv and for the same money they were able to package it and sell it in theaters, then they’ll still get the subscription bump when it hits Disney+.

Story telling aside (because that’s not what this article is about) this will be a model for star wars and probably marvel for years to come

    18. It was enjoyable and funny. We had a good time and so the audience. While I know the reviews were 👎🏼 but I got what I expected a longer TV episode in the theatre.
