FYI, the „+“ in 2SLGBTQ+ stands for everything else that wouldn’t practically fit under the umbrella

  2. Genuine question: would it not make more sense to have a single, uniform term to represent the community rather than confusing and inconsistent acronyms? For example, ‘The Pride Community’ seems like it would be all encompassing, easy to understand and inclusive.

Just gonna throw this out there: Indigenous men are murdered at roughly 3x the rate of Indigenous women.

If this is about inclusivity, why are they omitted? The article tells us that:

    >The full acronym has been used for years in government, advocacy, and community contexts to emphasize intersectionality. It is intentionally lengthy in order to name everyone who has historically been left out of national conversations about violence, justice, and safety.

but are we seriously going to pretend that Indigenous men, at least as victims, *haven’t* been left out of national conversations about violence, justice, and safety?

Couldn’t we just say „missing and murdered Indigenous *people*“?

I know MMIWG2, and LGBTQQIA+ but never altogether.
It’s two separate entities, as far as I know.

  5. Alphabet people is starting to sound more and more reasonable rather than just trying to guess the right acronym that’s currently in favor.

IMO, the cause has not been helped by adding any additional letters beyond LGBT, it’s just made the whole movement seem silly. I say this as a socially liberal person who supports equal rights for everyone, that this dialog is only feeding the fire on the wrong side of the equation that is raging stronger everyday.

You know, I’m all for the message and what they’re about. But they’ve gotta understand that so many people, possibly even a majority of people, are gonna see an acronym like that and roll their eyes and tune them out.

    They gotta workshop that one.

This is the kind of thing that makes people roll their eyes and shut out everything they perceive as left.

A stupid acronym. Just say whatever it stands for instead.

    This is getting ridiculous

Ok I know it’s more fun get upset without reading, but i just looked at the article. It’s an acronym used largely by activists specifically referring to the ongoing violence against Indigenous women and LGBTQ+ people. It’s like a hash tag that basically means calling attention to the disproportionate violence against „Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, 2 Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people“.

  10. This is just getting out of hand. How are missing and murdered Indigenous Women a sexual orientation or tied up into this.

  11. This right here is why the fringe left (and right) aren’t taken super seriously.

I’m as progressive as anyone else with a brain, but I got off the boat at LGBTQ (maybe somes +). Now we are adding murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls? How about an H for homeless? How about DV for domestic violence victims? R for robbery victims? How about D for disabled, another A for autistic, and another S for those who attempt suicide? A third S for straight? P for pets? Another I for imaginary friends?

This is why progressives lose people and why conservatives win. They take their good intentions and reasonable efforts to be inclusive, understanding, and advocating and take it to a level where almost nobody is.

What did grandmother say? “So open minded that your brains fall out.” or what does my friend say? “The social/political spectrum isn’t a line, it’s a circle. So left you’re right.”

Mmiwg is fair game. Missing murdered indigenous women and girls.

Mashing it with the rest idk. There isn’t anything necessarily gay or straight about them. The mashup is a bit weird.

Speaks more to our society’s love for pigeon holing and categorizing. People who identify as any of that aren’t immune.

  15. If I don’t know someone’s deal I’ll call them „friend“, and treat them how I would want them to treat me.

  16. The part im confused about is Im not sure how we are commiting genocide, she seems to be talking about the present not the past. Isn’t a lot of the problem due to gladue anyways?

If you find yourself trying to describe something and want to be taken seriously do not use a *sixteen* character acronym. Something so long reads as parody or bad satire.

It sounds like all these groups are coming closer to realizing that all lives matter.

I’m extremely progressive and I’m not committing all that to memory. That’s some Eddington level parody.

So many letters and numbers have been added, that it takes away the power of the original intent.
I’m LGBT+, that’s all the letters that’s needed. Anything else just seems like an attempt to ‘hitch a wagon’ to further another cause.

  21. Murdered and missing indigenous women and girls (no idea how they got lumped in), two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and the + covers everyone else who isn’t just a straight white man.

Can I identify as missing just for tomorrow’s work meeting — Then I’ll be found.
