  1. Yes please. If we survive this, people in the future will loose their marbles on how we allowed children to run freely at the mercy of the engagement algos.

I think that’s not enough, we should install cameras in every citizens‘ home to ensure every child’s safe being. Anyone who opposes this must clearly be a suspicious person.

No surveillance measures are enough until we can guarantee everyone’s safety.

    >!obvious satire, fuck these assholes!<

  3. I urge EU-wide ban on over-50s using social media.

I also urge EU-wide ban on over-65s to hold any public office or advisory position of these offices.

The course selling cryptobros are going to have trouble recuting new cult members for their get rich quick schemes. That will be good.

The last thing the world needs is more idiots renting lambos and using bro as punctuation mark.

Oh no, another way to push privacy invasion and variants of chat control?

Because this is a big issue.

And it’s true that there are issues with youth being addicted to social media, but there are also positive sides of social media being somewhat more difficult to control than mass media.

Heck information on the genocide against Palestinians travelled mostly on social media.

The thing is it should be parents‘ responsibility to address this matter.

  6. Yeah better bana those for everyone. Those have already ruined adults as well. Obsession for attention, content farming, being trained to react overly emotionally to everything, getting triggered, falling for rage baits, extreme polarisation.

Social media has definitely affected society and human behaviour and not for the good.

  7. Just regulate social media. Period. Want to make business in Europe, control hate speech and illegal activities and bots.

Not that hard. They already do it, and it’s one of those few things where AI is really incredibly useful.

I urge an EU-wide ban on covering up Greek train crashes and Greek politicians and their cronies defrauding the CAP

  9. What a coincidence that they ban social media for young people at the age when they are most rebellious and come up with ideas against authoritarian governments.

Wouldn’t want the younger generation to learn about other world views and how incompetence and corruption hurts people on a daily basis.

I’m from Romania and I’d imagine it’s not long until the asshats in charge start with this shit here as well. And there’s plenty antivax boomers to support it.

But, like others have said. If under 15s shouldn’t have access to social media, over 65s also shouldn’t. Let’s remove voting and driving rights from the oldies as well while we’re at it, since we’re so concerned about public safety and moral „correctness“. A 65 year old has 10-15 years left of their life. As much as a 15 year old has been alive for. They have no stake in the game anymore and it’s well known that their cognitive performance declines.

But, since we’re not settling this on facts….

As I said under every post about social media bann no matter from what country: go ahead, have fun trying

  12. Ypu know, just enforce proper moderation and that wouldn’t be an issue. The whole „ban teens from social media“ is just bowing to big tech

  13. Angel_Of_Death09 on

I’m sure the Greek government which was spying on opposition party members and army personnel with Israeli spyware will implement this social media ban in privacy friendly manner.

  14. Stelmaria_of_Denmark on

If think they should be banned for everyone above the age of 65 instead. They’re the ones buying most easy into to that right wing propaganda sh*t on Facebook anyway.

  15. InformationNew66 on

Ban on social media is actually de-anomyzation and mass surveillance.

Why are newspapers covering for authoritarians?

  16. Good. Finally someone had the courage to put an end to this insanity. It was a long time coming and I hope this spreads across the EU.

  17. >National action alone will not suffice

    Why not?

A system for age verification is already being planned at the EU level. That can be used later on. But the protection of minors remains the responsibility of the member states. Countries that consider a social media ban to be appropriate can implement one, while others cannot.

  18. Hasn’t Australia’s similar ban been largely ineffective? Anyway this is clearly just another excuse for mass data collection and the erosion of anonymity under the guise of „protecting children“

  19. Just ban it for everyone. yeah, it would suck for a few weeks not to have reddit, but we’d get over it soon and we’d all be better for it

  20. I am principally in favour of age restrictions, however since it’s impossible to implement in a privacy-protecting way I am practically heavily opposed.

However, the biggest problem with today’s social media is the algorithm. Regardless of whether that algorithm pushes unhealthy beauty standards on children or if it pushes democracy-threatening disinformation to adults, it is harmful to society.

The algorithms by their very nature promote content that is engaged with, and controversial content will be more engaged with due to human nature. Add to that that e.g. Meta deliberately promote content with „emotional“ reactions like 😡 over simple reactions like 👍 and the problem is amplified.

Even in the absence of deliberate steering, the algorithm will always promote harmful content.

Outlaw the algorithms! Make social media go back to the early days of e.g. Facebook and Instagram where all you had was a chronological feed of people you were already friends with. I.e. *social* media.

That way we’ll get rid of most of the crap that is harmful to kids too.

  21. Age verification and social media restrictions are just a way for more control and policing by the government and in turn will erode freedom of expression. The EU shouldn’t allow this to happen but I fear the EU is going to be the bureaucratic leader on this.

  22. twitterfluechtling on

Cool. And to achieve that, unfortunately, we need authentication for everyone and absolute control on all social media. Not the plan, obviously, but now there is no other way, see? /S

  23. Surely this isn’t just another push for age verification which essentially will end online anonymity, right?

    >His proposals included a fully harmonized EU-wide age verification framework to be implemented by the end of 2026

    Color me shocked.

  24. „instead of educating people and doing awareness campaigns, we will push age verification laws so we can control everyone“

  25. Bapistu-the-First on

Very good development, it’s mindblowing we let children roam free on these apps were shady people/influencers or even our adversaries like Russia or Iran can freely poison the minds of children.

  26. mordordoorodor on

With the increase of the hybrid wars by Russia, China, Iran and now the USA – all working to weaken European democracies – it will be unavoidable to stop anonymous internet / social media access in the near future.

IDs will be required to access sites like Facebook, Youtube or Reddit. There is simply no other way…

Websites will happily do it, otherwise they will just die…. most sites are already getting close to being useless due to the number of AI bots taking over. The Dead Internet Theory is coming true.

  27. This is really needed. So much evidence points to social media being terrible for brain development. Implementation is questionable, but the need to strong curtailing is not.

  28. John_OSheas_Willy on

What is the definition of social media? Is whatsapp social media? I can join groups and follow people there, similar to instagram.

  29. Ok and how is social media described? Facebook? Tiktok? Instagram? Whatsapp? SMS?
