  1. „Cancer cells may be tapping into an unexpected energy source: an antioxidant long associated with protecting healthy cells. Researchers have discovered that tumors appear to be “addicted” to glutathione, a molecule widely known for preventing cellular damage, which they use as a key fuel source. The discovery not only challenges conventional thinking about antioxidants but also highlights a possible new target for cancer treatment.

The body produces glutathione naturally, and it is also widely sold as a dietary supplement. It is often promoted for its health benefits, but the National Cancer Institute has issued more cautious guidance about how nutrients and supplements may relate to cancer.

„It’s important to understand how cancer hijacks certain substances that we may think of as harmless,“ Harris said, emphasizing that antioxidants can be a double-edged sword in some circumstances.“

  2. I looked up what foods contain this or help the body make more and the list can be essentially summarized as „every healthy organic food you can think of“ so, this isn’t a „this food could be causing you cancer so you should cut it out“ type of finding if thats what the title hinted at you

So I should just not take supplements with high glutathione amounts, is the primary action to take?

  4. The antioxidant is glutathione.

That glutathione can be pro tumorigenic has been known.

This publication is specifically characterizing that glutathione gets metabolized as a source of the amino acid, cysteine, by tumor cells.

I notice a comment about glutathione in food. The vast majority of our glutathione exposure is from synthesis by our livers. Furthermore, dietary glutaathione is readily metabolized in our gi tract. glutathione is a normal component of human physiology. you cannot just deprive yourself of glutathione by not eating certain foods, and that wouldnt be something you want to do regardless of if you have cancer or not. The work is valuable for understanding mechanism and possibly for development of targeted pharmaceutical intervention.
