I don’t think Iran would be okay with losing 90 % of its oil exports, especially given how dependent it is on natural resources to sustain its already fragile economy.

That’s so cute. Someone actually takes anything Trump says seriously.

The US screwed its own ability to seize the kharg island when it bombed the sole runway there because doing so shortened its distance from 6000 feet to 3000 which now makes it unsuitable for heavy airlifters like the C-17 Globemaster or the C-5 Galaxy which will compel the military to rely on slower and smaller aircraft like the C130

    DJT: let’s take the island.
    General Caine: it’ll be difficult.
    DJT: nevermind

That would be an effective way for US to copy Russia’s meat wave tactic of losing thousands of soldiers a day for no benefit

Iran destroying all that oil infrastructure on the first sign of an American assault wouldn’t surprise me one bit. If they know they’re going to lose it anyway why would they let Trump get it?

  7. Bigging up the prospect of a US strike on Kharg Island would fit a classic deception strategy: focus public attention on a credible target to draw Iran’s defence resources to that location, whilst the real objective is elsewhere.

A clear comparison is the Gulf War under Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, where the fear of a US amphibious assault along Kuwait’s coast tied down the Iraqi forces in the wrong place, while the main attack was across the desert, and outflanked the Iraqi army.

This may be part of what is going on.

  8. since the plan is already obvious, i think iran already made that island full of traps or some sort. They know they can’t prevent the island from getting captured. But they sure can inflict high casualties, which can make the US war support even more unpopular

defending yourself there will be hard – especially if you rule out Ukrainian tech

I wouldn’t like to be in the shoes of the captain who will have to sail the Ormuz strait with the USS Tripoli or one of the landing ships… Scary thing having to go throught a narrow, predictable path with ships so big and so near an hostile land.

How well historically has relying on dangerous airlifts gone surrounded by the enemy?

Lmao there’s a reason why no one has tried before. Russia’s navy got fucked in the Black Sea because it’s so confined, imagine the strait of Hormuz 😂 it’s literally a suicide mission and will give Iran another decisive victory.

The story about capturing Kharh island is a bluff or misdirection. The island can be controlled by the Airforce.

Ground forces if deployed will be to the area across from Oman in Iran at the narrow area of the Hormuz strait.

You’d have to seize like 3-4 other islands just to open a safe amphibious route to Kharg island. It would be a grinding island hoping campaign that would need way more than a few thousand marines.

Meanwhile Kharg’s usefulness to Iran would be destroyed if you blew up the one pipeline supplying th island’s sole oil docking terminal. One missile at one pump house and boom. Kharg is a useless pile of rocks. No need to get servicemen killed over it.

  16. Wonder does anyone in American seniour military actually supporting this , or they just going to put vice admiral Leroy Jenkins in charge?

We’re gonna send a lot of young men to be turned into mincemeat by FPV drones. Warfare always favors the defending army. If Ukraine is any lesson, 20:1 casualties can be expected.

  18. „Mull“ and „Strategy“ involve the mind, but they operate at opposite ends of the cognitive spectrum – one is about the process of wandering through thoughts, while the other is about the structure of achieving an end goal.

  19. Trump mulls over a cheese burger. If it tasts good, he’ll do it, maybe, we’ll see what happens. „Nobody has ever mulled like me. People are saying, look at that muller. Probably the best muller in history. By the way, I mulle better than Lincoln. Lincoln couldn’t mull. Nobody can. Only I can mull. You’ll be so tired of mulling, you’ll say please stop. We can’t take more mulling. We’ve got enough now, Sir. Sir? I cry when I think of all the mulling you’ve done for American. Thank you Sir. You’re the best president in history. Probably the best in the world, maybe even the universe“

  20. Seizing Kharg doesn’t make sense unless you seize the mainland around the Strait to allow a flotilla of landing craft and support ships to the island. And it doesn’t make sense unless you seize the mainland near Kharg to deny short range attacks against our military on the island.

Blowing up Kharg serves no purpose because then Iran has no incentive to ever allow the strait to open.

Kharg is an idiots idea of a quick solution.

  21. KittehKittehKat on

    Taking it probably straight forward.

Taking it without damaging the infrastructure I have no idea how you do it.

  22. Those who attempted to visit Kharg Island have never returned. The natives have a great fear and built a giant wall, a fear that has never been explained.

It’s a good thing we’ve given them plenty of warning of our intentions so they can reinforce the island with men and machinery…

  24. This is not where the oil comes from, this is where the oil goes to be put on ships. The reason we aren’t blowing it up or taking it is bc if this is destroyed 1) China/India can’t get oil from here now and in the future, they’re much more involved in this, 2) more importantly they’re buying oil from other places that drives the price of the other markets way up, which is to say our prices, 3) Iran believe it or not has been holding back on some of its own targets it can reach that are major infrastructural hubs for natural gas and oil that the would now hit.

Moral of the Story: If we take this place offline oil and oil futures fly through the roof, if we take it without destroying it it’s not such a long term problem, only bc we plan to give it back to whoever is in charge at the end, but oil still goes up now, and Iran could blow it up themselves to continue their attack on the world oil markets at the center of the world economy.

It’s worth noting the USA has allowed Iran to export oil during this war to keep the price of oil lower and not piss off China as much.

  25. I’ve still not heard how we’re supposed to get through the strait. What happens when there’s pics/vids of sinking US vessels?

  26. It would make things so much more complicated for everyone, not just Iran.

The strategic area and real choke-point is the Hormuz strait. Can’t occupy the area on the Iranian side, it’s rather hilly and there is a major city with a population of 500k there.

Strategically, it would make more sense to seize parts of the island of Quesm. It’s located directly into the strait, it has a rather low population. Seize an area large enough to set up a forward base, control the island and prevent an Iranian landing, and you just caused immense grief in Iran. They haven’t lost any significant territory since 1828.

Expect losses during the operation. Expect attrition and more losses over time. Consider what happened to Russia when they seized Snake Island in Ukraine.

If I were in charge of the IRGC I would fortify and booby-trap the hell out of that island. Knowing where one’s enemy is going to attack is extremely vital information.

Also, that island is very important for the world’s oil market. If the oil infrastructure on that island goes up in smoke the rest of the world gets screwed up as well. The IRGC probably has a mentality of „if I can’t have it, then no one will have it“. This is what religious fundamentalists think, they are willing to „go down with the ship“ as long as the enemy goes down with them.

This is a war that our orange, idiotic, impulsive, convicted felon president created.

  29. clintgreasewoood on

You still have to get the US Navy ships through the Straight of Hormuz.

  30. I would bet that most of that infrastructure is rigged to blow if anything happens.

  31. Normal People: After going to the effort of seizing the island, any standing force will be a constant target for Iranian drones and proxy militia attacks.

Marines: If we’re surrounded, we can attack in all directions.
