The Unifor president, Lana Payne, is insanely wishful in her thinking that we can turn things around with the US and Donald Trump. Despite Trump repeatedly stating that he doesn’t want cars built in Canada, Payne wants Canada to focus all of its energy on getting Trump to reverse the auto tariffs. I understand it’s her job to try and keep the auto industry alive, but there’s not a shred of rationality in Trump, and it seems even the most favourable of deals wouldn’t change his mind. In the end, I don’t know if fighting jobs of any kind from China is a good idea when there is likely to be none in the future with how the integrated North American automotive market is being dismantled.
