    The US has lifted sanctions on Venezuela’s „interim“ president, clearly showing she now has the favour of Washington. She was originally sanctioned during Trump’s first term, after Maduro won(?) the election in 2018. The US has also recognised her as the country’s „sole head of state“ in a civil case at a federal court. Technically Maduro is still president and Rodríguez needs the Assembly’s endorsement to extend her 90-day temporary office by this Friday.

  2. Obviously other stories have kind of taken over the news this year, but it still blows my mind that we kicked off 2026 with the US operation in Venezuela. The world feels so different from pre-Trump when I think most people ultimately believed in a sense of international law and order.
