    Momentum is always welcome.

“Brexit did deep damage to our economy, and the opportunities to strengthen our security and cut the cost of living are simply too big to ignore,” he told reporters.

“So in the coming weeks, we will announce a new summit with our EU partners, and I can tell you that at that summit, the U.K. will not just ratify existing commitments made at last year’s summit.

“We want to be more ambitious, closer economic cooperation, closer security cooperation, a partnership that recognizes our shared values, our shared interest and our shared future, a partnership for the dangerous world that we must navigate together, a world where this government will be guided at all times by the interests of the British people.”

  2. He needs to tell that to Engerland and Wales. The rest of us already know that. 🤬

  3. Before people predictably comment “maybe you should have thought about that before you left the EU” Starmer was pro EU and wasn’t in power then.

In fact he campaigned for Remain at the time.

The EU is treating the UK far worse than it treating any other third country apart from Russia, etc. So he now wants the UK to become a vassal state of an institution that wants to see the UK fail.

    Complete idiot.

Closer to Eu and ultimate rejoin seems the only logical solution. However I am afraid the EU both would like a rejoin and also be reluctant.

Even with a horrendous amount of steep concessions the British played partly the role of a mole despite shaping so much of legislative and architectural design of the EU (especially looking at the internal market and extremely fast adoption of the eastern bloc countries).

  6. We don’t want the UK.

Brexit means brexit, and the UK bet all of its chances on the Commonwealth and the special relationship, so if you feel the US is not reliable enough, get closer to Pakistan or Australia.

  7. I just can’t believe that the notion that we would be stronger as an independent, small island off the coast of Europe – rather than being part of a unified bloc of other countries was ever accepted.

A properly unified and cooperative Europe would be incredibly strong and dominant. Why would you ever want out of that.

Half the buggers that voted for Brexit are rotting six feet under so this is a welcome move

We should stop all this nonsense and just rejoin. It’s embarrassing trying to have a foot in and a foot out. We called it wrong. Can’t we just be adult enough to admit it and move on. But nope politicians have to never admit fault.

Maybe a good idea when you can see the eu form your southern coast line

  11. This is obviously true now, even if you wanted to argue that it was a reasonable choice in 2016 (which it wasn’t, but for arguments‘ sake…)

Sadly, anyone left who still thinks it’s a good idea has morphed into some freakish zealot for whom the argument has moved on from „the UK should not be I’m the EU“ to a completely rabid, unhinged „THE UK SHOULD HAVE JOTHING TO DO WITH EUROPE AND ANY ACT OF COOPERATION WITH THEM IS BETRAYAL!“ This insane view has also morphed from an opinion held into a core principle of their sad, empty so-called personalities. Sadly, even though many now say they’ve changed their mind, the establishment dances to their tune, and most of them will change their mind back come the next general election… which they’ll do well in, because FPTP favours focused small groups over what the majority want.

TLDR: Brexiteers are still thick detritus, but continue to infest every aspect of the political conversation.

  12. That’s good, I would also like to have a closer relationship with the UK again. To quote Willy Brandt: What belongs together will come together.

Brexit – one of the most successful russian influence operations. Makes one wonder if we, as a free, liberal society even deserve the freedom, if we take it for granted and can be so easily manipulated. All that money, all the work that went into the failed brexit project. All because people can get so easily conned out of their freedom, out of unity, out of wealth. It’s sad.

No thanks. I would rather we stick with the CPTPP and not need EU permission for stuff.

  15. just fucking rejoin the EU already. UK has learned its lesson (i hope) and the rest of the EU can learn from the UKs example to not make the same mistake.

He woke up. It was a terrible mistake to say that rejoining or going back to the single market will not happen in his lifetime.

  17. We should never have left the EU in the first place. Perhaps if Nigel Farage hadn’t tried to manipulate the election it might have gone the way it should have. Boris Johnson also lied about there being an extra £350M a week for the NHS which has never been in worse shape.
