    ***EXCLUSIVE The Telegraph reports:***

[Donald Trump](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/donald-trump/) has told The Telegraph he is strongly considering pulling the United States out of [Nato](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/nato/) after it failed to join his war on Iran.

The US president labelled the alliance a “paper tiger” as he said removing America from the defence treaty was now “beyond reconsideration”.

It is the strongest sign yet that the White House no longer regards Europe as a reliable defence partner following the rejection of Mr Trump’s demand that allies send warships to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr Trump was asked if he would reconsider the US’s membership of the alliance after the conflict. “Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration,” he replied. “I was never swayed by Nato. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”

Nato partners have been reluctant to help reopen the strait, through which 20 per cent of the world’s oil typically travels. Tehran has effectively closed the strait for weeks, sending global oil and gas prices spiralling while threatening a global recession.

    Tbh Not surprised
I expect this action on iran was a combination of a „going out with a bang“ he bombs the shit out of iran, leaves nato and pulls out the middle east although more likely the latter wont happen

Trump basically gets what he wants which he thinks is a victory but with how they fumbled the strategy part of war they have actually lost
    Lol

  3. So, literally what he’s been saying for years?

Good job it takes Congress but we still need to be ready for usa not doing their part in nato.

  4. Why would the rest of nato join? It’s a defensive alliance and the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran first

  5. The plan all along I’m sure. Didn’t Biden put something in place so that he can’t do this though?

“Congress enacted a law that prohibits the President from „suspend[ing], terminat[ing], denounc[ing], or withdraw[ing] the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty“—which established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)—without the advice and consent of the Senate or an act of Congress.”

Well let’s see if that holds up I guess

Then pull out. Yes it will be a challenge for Europe but then we can at least operate under that understanding and move on. This constant “ooh I might do it, i might pull out or maybe I won’t” bullshit is tiresome. Make a decision.

  7. Keeping aside the context and the source of this intention: what would actually bring a US withdrawal from NATO?

Would the alliance just dissolve within a few years? After all why would remaining Europe/Canada warrant Turkey’s security for instance?

Or would it morph into something new? Losing access to US intelligence and general strategic thinking would be an even tougher loss than weapon systems.

This idiot does not understand that NATO is a *defensive* alliance. It is not there for individual member states to pick fights around the world and then drag everyone else into them. Yes, there were arguably offensive NATO operations in Afghanistan and the former Yugoslavia, but these were because of a formal invocation of Article 5 (in the former) or due to a broad-based consensus of members (in the latter).

Trump cannot pull the US out of NATO without a vote in Congress (which he won’t get) but he can just ignore any Article 5 declaration by another member. But any European NATO country who thinks Donald Trump would have their back in a future conflict with Russia has long been disabused of that notion.

So… Putin knows it is a paper tiger and yet launches an expensive war to prevent one of their neighbors to join NATO?

He can’t do this unilaterally. It must be approved by congress and they don’t have the votes.

EU needs to do a reverse uno on this guy and pull every nation out of NATO to form an EU Central Defence.

Ofc that won’t happen but I really hope the museum archivists that run the EU atm actually do more than drink coffee and draft strongly worded letters and start seriously considering reducing reliance on the US across the board, including EU Defence.

  12. He can consider all he likes. In practice, he will never find the supermajorities necessary in congress to act upon it.

Per NATO rules, there’s a 12 month exit period. It is not something that happens overnight, and I’m not sure if the resignation is set in stone, once the US hands it to NATO – or if they can withdraw it within those 12 months.

A fundamental problem is that you Americans never mastered the art of defenestration.

Donald, Donnie, Don…. clearly this is what you were doing for your bud Putin all along. Just because your voting base is brain dead doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t see it.

    >…

    >Mr Trump added: “Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe. And I didn’t do a big sale. I just said, ‘Hey’, you know, I didn’t insist too much. I just think it should be automatic.

    >“We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn’t our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren’t there for us.”

But the United States are the ones who failed this test by pulling out support for Zelenskyy after the Oval Office humiliation ritual.
    >“You don’t even have a navy. You’re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn’t work,” he said, referring to the state of Britain’s fleet of warships.

    >Asked if the Prime Minister should spend more on defence, Mr Trump added: “I’m not going to tell him what to do. He can do whatever he wants. It doesn’t matter. All Starmer wants is costly windmills that are driving your energy prices through the roof.”

Does he not understand the actual reason prices are goin up in the last few weeks? What does the Strait of Hormuz have to do with windmills?

I mean no one trust the current US to step in anyway in case of attach.

If nato joined then next month Trump attacks Switzerland or something and makes the same threat, “attack with us or we leave nato”. Its clear what he wants hes just looking for an excuse

  20. DisasterNo1740 on

This is so blatantly a pathetic attempt at pressuring NATO nations in getting involved in Iran

As a Dutch person, I say do it. It will give every country in Europe freedom to just make their own nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons and delivery are the only defensive mechanism that matters. US convinced most of Europe to not make their own, with the idea being non-proliferation and a nuclear umbrella. If we have our own ability to wipe out every city in the US, Russia and China we are done with defense and we can also stop helping the US in all their expeditions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, etc.
