  1. As the July 1, 2026 review date for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement approaches, Mexico and Canada are pursuing markedly different negotiating strategies with the Trump administration. Mexico has initiated substantive technical discussions with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on critical issues such as regional vehicle content and supply-chain security, while Canada remains largely sidelined with only recent, limited re-engagement after months of minimal contact. Mexico’s approach reflects President Claudia Sheinbaum’s cultivation of a close relationship with President Trump and her willingness to make transactional concessions, including alignment on Chinese tariffs and continental supply-chain integration, whereas Canada has taken a more independent stance by pursuing trade ties with China and other economies. The divergent paths have raised concerns among trade analysts that the trilateral agreement could collapse into separate bilateral deals, with Mexico and the United States positioned as the more deeply engaged partners while Canada risks being left at a disadvantage in the continental trade framework.

It’s simple, Mexico wasn’t threatened with annexation. Like Carney said at Davos; “ you cannot live within the lie of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.”

Whether you like Carney or not the guy is extremely intelligent and has a plan.
