„The data shows that Lewis had broad support from each of the camps and was the top second choice of the supporters of McPherson, Johnston and McQuail, with only more of Ashton’s supporters ranking McPherson second. The results also show that more members ranked Lewis at least somewhere on their ballot than any other candidate, and that he had more first ballot support than any candidate had combined first and second choice support.“
„Johnston’s campaign was surprisingly strong. While she finished a distant third on the first ballot, she had nearly twice as many second ballot votes as did Ashton and still had more third ballot votes than him. Lewis’s votes were concentrated on the first ballot (duh), McPherson’s on the first and second and Johnston’s on the second and third. But Ashton had more fourth ballot choices than any of the candidates. He was more likely to be ranked fourth than he was second, while Johnston was more likely to be ranked second than she was third.“
Throughout the whole campaign everyone spoke as if the real three contenders were Lewis, McPherson and Ashton. Turns out Tanille Johnston was actually the third real contender and Ashton belonged with Tony. I am imagine she could have done even better if the media didn’t treat her as marginal candidate. I ranked her second after McPherson but had no idea she would do so well. She is set up well to take North Island Powell River back from Aaron Gunn.
Avi Lewis won big by every measure. As some who is not a fan of his I will give him a chance. I can’t ignore the size of his victory. The reactions to his victory over the top to me. His online supporters are really annoying and do him a disservice. His campaign people are far better to interact with in person.
I don’t mind saying that I put Tanille Johnston first and Heather McPherson second. Did I think Tanille would win? No but I liked what she had to say and wanted her to do well. I knew that Avi was the front runner going into voting. I figured either he would win it on the first ballot and it wouldn’t matter how I ranked my choices beyond my first choice (which is what happened) or it would go beyond the first ballot and my vote would eventually go to Heather.
As others have said, Avi won fair and square. I’ll give him a chance to lead and do it well.
