Students and citizens of Serbia protested en masse in front of the Rectorate building tonight, after members of the Criminal Police Department raided the institution earlier today, reports [Serbian media](https://n1info.rs/vesti/protest-ispred-rektorata-zbog-upada-ukp/).
A double police cordon has been set up in front of the main entrance to the Rectorate building on the side of Student Square, and across from them are citizens shouting in protest.
A conflict broke out between police and citizens at an intersection near the National Museum. The police beat the crowd with batons, and some citizens threw soil from flower pots at the police.
The students say that the situation is very tense and on the verge of an incident. They believe that the break-in at the Rectorate is a precedent and that, if they do not defend it, they could say goodbye to any future.
„Unfortunately, nothing new, especially after the local elections. The plainclothes police first wanted to negotiate with us. We told them they came without a warrant. This is the most brutal demolition of the University’s autonomy so far. I believe this was done because of the protest that is supposed to start at 19 p.m.,“ he said.
When the police cordon near the National Museum with masked police officers was replaced by members of the police brigade in full equipment to break up the demonstrations, at one point there was a physical confrontation between masked police officers and citizens.
Ana Mihajlovski, the editor of the portal „Nash Portal“, who is in front of the Rectorate on her journalistic assignment, said that the police pushed her out.
„None of us were listened to when we came to report on what was happening,“ she told H1.
This morning, officers of the Criminal Police Directorate entered the premises of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade on the orders of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, as part of a comprehensive investigation into the death of a 25-year-old student and possible irregularities in the work of the Rectorate.
The demonstration is still ongoing and large crowd is still there. The Rector of the university is being held by police inside the building, protesters are calling for police to let him address the crowd from the balcony. The police have violated the legal autonomy of the university which states that police cannot enter a university without permission from the dean or rector. Within an hour of the raid, pro-regime media began to post images of police“findings“ including walkie-talkies and gas masks. Here are some live streams of the situation;

This is really grim to watch. If you’ve got the bandwidth, one concrete thing you can do is save and mirror those livestreams/clips, regimes love erasing inconvenient evidence later.
