I’ve generally never been a fan of using the term „illegal“ in front of wars because there’s almost no hope they’d be legal. This is because of the dysfunctionality of the security council. Intervention or war can only be sanctioned through unanimous consent of the permanent five members of the security council, who are China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The US and Russia/Soviet Union have a history of ignoring the security council but also of blocking any kind of proposal the other or its allies/satellites proposed. Not that I support the war, but comments like Carney’s (he’s certainly not the only one doing this) really disregard the impracticalities of engaging in interventions or wars that respect the rules of international law. I get the feeling they don’t talk about it because they don’t want to highlight how useless international law can be.
Looks like someone finally read the polls. Or, I would say that, but there’s zero chance he didn’t already know Israel’s atrocities are exceedingly unpopular when he declared his support for the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. If anything, this reads to me as a reaction to the buzz generated by Avi Lewis, who is explicitly anti-Zionist, becoming the NDP leader.
