    **In Brief:**

    * The new survey from the Angus Reid Institute polled Canadians on their views of social media broadly. Respondents reported nearly unanimously that they are concerned about children being exposed to cyber bullying, misinformation and explicit content.
    * 75% of respondents agreed with banning social media for kids under 16. For those who supported a ban from specific apps, 88% of respondents pointed to TikTok, 86% said X/Twitter and 84% said Snapchat. Only half of respondents said YouTube should be included.
    * 94% of those polled also said they were concerned about the negative mental health impacts and addictive effects that social media can have on young people.
    * The report follows a ruling last week in California that found Meta and YouTube to be as addictive as cigarettes or digital casinos. The jury found the companies to be “deliberately addictive and harmful to children,” and the plaintiff was awarded $6 million (U.S.).
    * A similar ban to Australia’s will be discussed by the federal Liberal party at the national convention in April.

I suspect many of those in support of a ban would be less enthusiastic when they learn how it would most likely be implemented.

  3. There are reasonable questions to ask with regards to how this might be implemented, but there certainly would be a lot of value in banning social media for those under 16

I mean yeah it is causing problems but let’s be honest. Retirees are just as bad if not worse for consuming and spreading misinformation.

Those same companies are just as addictive and harmful to boomers and the electorate not educated in verifying information

  7. That means most Canadians support providing ID to social media companies right? Right?

  8. Was the follow-up questions asked in this survey?

    1) To confirm someone is older than 16, please enter identifiable information – which will be checked against a federal DB – to log in. Are you still good with it?

    2) What level of responsibility should a parent have in managing their children’s online content?

    3) Are you good with a government mandating what people can see?

Sorry friends, if people understand what is actually happening, there’s no way people would be willing to accept a digital ID. Which is what this is.

Regardless of whether it is a good or bad idea, exactly how would it be enforced?

  10. Ban it entirely

Its a cyber warfare/political tool used by foreign governments on people all around the world.

Personally I think it should be 18 as it’s been found over and over to be incredibly addictive and destructive to social groups at young ages.

This would almost certainly require ID verification to be enforced, let’s not repeat the actions of the UK, they had a massive security breach shortly after they implemented this for Discord.

I don’t enjoy the idea of living in a nanny state because parents are too lazy to you know, parent

  13. Banning social media is more complicated than taking away the phone from your kid.

  14. Meta and other social media companies are extremely pleased with this, they can slowly force an entire generation to give up their IDs to access their stuff. Eventually everything you do online will be tracked right back to you.

  15. Straight up I’d be okay with them banning it until 18. Social media is a devastated addiction to forming minds. Yes it has a ton of pluses, but at a much larger cost of mental health

  16. I support under 16s losing access to social media. I do not support any of the means required to make it possible.

Edit: what canada needs is a cultural change. Letting your kids use social media should carry the same stigma as giving them cigarettes. Parents should feel ashamed to tell others that they let their kids use any if that.

I agree with the sentiment but in practice, I don’t know how it’s feasible. Plus giving personal information to corporations, I know it’s done a lot these days but I’d rather limit that.

I actually agree, it was nice growing up in a time where you could just be yourself without having to worry about your image. I think they still need a way for communicating with their peers though and event scheduling. Back in my day we used SMS 🤣 but it was a hassle.

  19. Ban it for everyone, it provides nothing to society. As I type this on Reddit I know but I think we’d all adjust accordingly

My preference is to ban all US social media. It’ll be better for the country.

  21. PeanutMean6053 on

I definitely support banning it for kids under 16. However, that’s my job as a parent, not the governments job.

Famously teenagers don’t abuse things they are limited to so this should work just fine!
