The DIY solar hack arriving in US homes: Americans are embracing easy, plug‑and‑play solar units that slash energy costs — even as Washington tries to slow the clean‑energy shift.

So.. at least here, we get about 4-5 solar hours a day. So a 1200w system will save about… $0.70/day tops.

It’s a boon for small cabins, tiny houses, ADUs or like a shed, but not super practical for the home yet for most people, savings are too minimal to be worth the hassle, with a long break even.

edit: I have a setup like this, but its likely never gonna break even, not super useful, but mostly kept for power outages where it shines!).

Power companies around here are also raising up their base rates, so used or not, is $.80-$1/day for just the priviledge of having a hookup, which limits savings as well.

Not sure why the downvotes, if you have a 1bd apartment. that is individually metered (less common in the US than EU) and live in the desert with 8-9 solar hours a day, or places like Hawaii with expensive electricity, would be a different value proposition.

Because of his his fucking insane war, tariffs and other insane actions, he is actually promoting E-mobility and renewables like a motherfucker. Great success!

  3. Would these systems have some sort of battery to act as a buffer between erratic solar production and your homes circuit?

  4. How the fuck are we being charged over two thousand dollars for a simple two panel plug in system ?

  5. The real issue is without a disconnect this can kill linemen. We go to an outage, expecting no current, but some asshole has his electric setup to feed into the grid without isolating it to your home and we end up with dead people. THIS is why they have been slow at rolling out these systems because we have enough jackasses with generators that do this already. Add in that so many cars can do this now too and you can have serious issues fast. This is all before people have checked if the circuit can handle the power running into it. It bypasses the fuse since it isnt coming thru the main fuses, possible overvoltage or fire risks on top of all that.

I said it before all new homes should have the disconnect installed it is at time of a new build under $500 and most times under 140 for the equipment, and is only a 4-6 minutes added to the construction time. How it worked when I was a lineman 20 years ago, we would go up the entire run and check if homes had lights on, and then go disconnect them from the pole to make sure none of us got lit up. Guess who were the last to get power anyone we had to manually go disconnect. Takes time and is a pain in the ass. Now do that in a major storm. All because some jackass did a janky install we have to check. This is one benefit of the new digital meters they can tell if it is still powered and send a message home.
