Wir feiern den Geburtstag des gefallenen Helden Serhii, Rufzeichen „Doktor“, der starb, als er seine verwundeten Kameraden beschützte. Am 29. März würde er 34 Jahre alt.

“His optimism and smile inspired faith in the hearts of his comrades,” — this is how the commander remembers fallen security unit soldier Serhii Azhnakin, call sign “Doctor.”

Today, March 29, he would have turned 34.  Serhii Azhnakin was born on March 29, 1992, in the village of Voznesenske in of Cherkasy region. He grew up in a rural working family alongside his sister, Iryna.

According to Serhii’s mother, Raisa, he was a curious and persistent child who became a true support and help to her and her husband from an early age. He had many friends and loved lively games and nature, especially winter activities such as skiing, sledding, and skating.

In 2010, he graduated from vocational school with a specialization in welding and worked for a time in his native village. Later, he fell in love with Nataliya from a neighboring village, with whom he lived and worked in Kyiv.

“A dreamer in life, he never sought perfection. He was very generous, he would give his last but also share. And he had countless friends; my husband and I could never find him at home,” said Serhii’s mother about that period of his life.

Serhii Azhnakin began his military service in the ranks of the territorial defense of his homeland after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 

“My comrades are great, and the commanders are experienced. Mom, everything is fine, don’t worry, we are strong, we are Ukrainians!” Serhii would tell his mother.

In October 2023, soldier Serhii was carrying out combat missions with his unit in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian defenders managed to reach the left bank of the Dnipro and set up positions. According to the brigade, this maneuver aimed to establish a foothold in the area and, later, to support a counteroffensive by Ukrainian Defense Forces.

During this time, Serhii lost a close friend and his squad commander, Taras.

“Serhii himself was lucky to survive, and the Russian bullet lodged in his helmet remained with him as a reminder. On December 12, 2023, soldier Serhii Azhnakin, together with his comrades, covered the evacuation of the wounded. This was supposed to be his last mission on that combat rotation. But in a fateful moment, the enemy used all available weapons and carried out a massive and brutal assault on the positions of Ukrainian defenders,” the brigade members recounted.

Serhii sustained fatal injuries. He was laid to rest on December 17, 2023, in his native village of Voznesenske.

For personal courage shown in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for devoted service to his military duty, by decree of the President of Ukraine No. 6/2024 on January 8, 2024, soldier Serhiy Azhnakin was posthumously awarded the Order ‘For Courage’ III degree.
