A tradition we have here is that we like to open it under water (so the smell doesn’t take over) and then one thing you can do is boil the remaining water and drink it as soup. Highly recommend it, tastes absolutely phenomenal. Didn’t like surströmming up until this
If it’s your first time I have two advices. 1. Open the can in a bucket if water. 2. Eat outdoors. The smell sticks inside for hours.
Okay, looking at that can it seems like you have quite a lot of bulging so be prepared for spray if you open it in air (I would open it underwater in a bucket). Also washing the fillets in neutral mineral water before bringing them to the table can help reduce the smell further.
Now as for eating, it sounds like you are on the right path. Bread wise yeah sure flatbread is the „true“ traditional thing but I’v been to many surströmmings parties where they use bread as well. Sour cream (or lokal equivalent to creme fraiche) is a must, as a beginner don’t be afraid to drown those bad boys. Chives are nice, a good hard yellow cheese is a must (preferably something with a pronounced salty essence) and of course boiled potatoes ( you want them boiled to where you can mash them on your bread with a fork). Some people have chopped onions as a side. In general anything you can think of that might go well as a topping is okay.
Drinks: beer, water and aquavit ( Again first timers be careful with the alcohol. The smell – alcohol combo can be debilitating)
The open under water method is mostly to avoid spraying yourself.
There is a fool proof spray free method.
Tilt the can on the side about 45 degrees. Start opening the can at the highest point. The gas will be released. Pressure equalizes and the danger is averted.
I applaud your approach of eating it as per tradition instead of the tiresome shock value challenge of just putting it in your mouth. No wonder they start vomiting.
I want some.
