The infighting is starting earlier than I expected. I kind of wonder how McPhearson is going to handle all of this because some Lewis‘ past rhetoric is not going to go over well in Alberta
Honestly, this infighting benefits no one and the Alberta NDP and Saskatchewan NDP are kind of self-sabotaging by picking these petty fights. This petty nonsense just represents how not serious the NDP is in being a serious party capable of governing.
This does likely guarantee the Sask Party’s next election victory. Nenshi was already running a poor campaign so blaming it on the feds is rather sour grapes. The SaskNDP has far more legitimate grievances towards the national party dragging them down.
Lewis wins with 56% of the vote, which I’ve read is the highest share any leadership candidate ever got. Though McPherson is at 29% as the runner-up. Both factions probably really don’t like each other.
That’s just under a third of the party that may see this as their worst-case scenario, and two provincial heads are coming out against Lewis. We may see those rumors about floor crossers to the Liberals materialize, given they were contingent on him winning this.
It’s going to take a lot of work to unify this party, I think.
Does the federal NDP need to split into a new green party and a workers party
Sincere question: Why should the federal NDP be willing to accommodate their counterparts in Alberta and Saskatchewan? What have ANDP and SNDP achieved in the past decade, aside from being repeatedly dog walked and humiliated by the most corrupt and incompetent conservative premiers in the country?
Good. If the federal NDP wants to be an irrelevant protest party that has no intention of trying to compromise or making any attempt to meet the electorate where it’s at, the provincial wings should jump ship. I am glad they aren’t wasting time here. This was a moment to rebuild, and the federal NDP decided it wants to take massive risks and jeopardize itself. This might be fine when you’re a serial loser of a party and have almost nothing left to lose, but the provincial NDP parties want to win and don’t need the Avi Lewis baggage hanging over them. They don’t need to go down with the sinking ship that is the federal party.
The Sask NDP will still have my vote. They at least have the vision to see the writing on the wall. We were never getting rid of the Sask Party with a federal NDP under Lewis. Other provinces would be wise to follow.
I honestly would not be surprised if we see at least one or two more NDP floor crossing to the Liberals as a consequence. I feel like Lewis’s victory is going to create a big schism between the West Coast and activist sides of the party that might be tough to mitigate.
The activist side of the party is popular with the NDP’s membership, but I think they’re a lot more alienating to the general electorate and most of the sitting MPs within the party. I feel like the West Coast side of the party and most of the federal MPs probably still don’t have warm feeling towards Lewis & Klein after the leap manifesto etc.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really care much at all about the Alberta and Saskatchewan NDP distancing themselves. They are effectively centre right parties in a lot of ways and fill the role of the Liberals in their respective provinces. If anything I consider it to be a sign that the federal NDP is heading in a good direction and not trying to crowd the centre with the Liberals, instead choosing to move further into a progressive and leftist party.
I’m so tired of hearing these people whine that oil and gas are the only way people can have jobs and that oil and gas jobs are worth keeping at the expense of the heat death of civilization.
