Hallo!

Based on the surname Ujlaki, it seems that your ancestors are from the part of Croatia called Međimurje, probably town Prelog. The town is close to the Hungarian border, so they are probably half Hungarian, half Croatian.

Horvath is a common surname in Hungary.

  2. Reddit is probably terrible way to research this as posters here are more interested in daily news.

There is a facebook group with people dedicated on helping others on this:

Otherwise, Horvat is the most common surname in Croatia and Slovakia and 2nd most popular in Slovenia, 5th most popular in Hungary.

It comes from the word Hrvat which means Croatian.

But go to that Croatian facebook group and you will find some help.

Ujlaki means Newly Settled, similar to Croatian Novosel. Since Međimurje was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for most of its history, immigrants would get that family name, and they were not necessarily Hungarian by ethnicity. Also, Horváth often means „a person that came from the area between rivers Sava and Drava“, not necessarily a Croat.
