  1. That’s honestly terrifying. Imagine being locked up for months in a place you’ve never even been to, all because an algorithm said “close enough.” And the worst part is they didn’t even double check basic things like where she actually was at the time. AI is supposed to assist, not replace common sense.

But sure let’s implement this technology into everything! What could possibly go wrong?

what happens when AI deepfakes a face onto some random to lockup whoever they want? Or creates a crime that never happened? We’re fucked

The issue isn’t just the AI but also about how much weight people give it without even questioning it

  5. The US gov already used AI to bomb a school full of children. It is a seriously flawed technology being vastly overused. Things like this will only continue to get worse and more commonplace until proper regulations are in place.

  6. This is just laziness and incompetence.  Not only on the part of the police but on the judge who would sign an arrest warrant simply based on AI facial recognition and apparently nothing else.

Kinda weak comparison but it’s like those awful auto-headlights that constantly high-beam other drivers. As soon as an „automatic“ feature is available all the lazy people prefer to shut off their brain and let the technology do its thing, no matter how well or poorly optimized it is. Plus the AI push coming from upper management, the increased work-load from understaffed workers expected to be more efficient from this tech., it’s a disaster and we’re only beginning to see the repercussions

  8. The best part about this is the attempt to blame a different police department. “This wasn’t our AI. A neighboring police department used it and told us it was her.” As though that vindicates you? AI or not, is there any situation where some different police department can say “I think this is your suspect” and then you’d just be like “great, let’s literally do zero work to verify this”?

And what about the prosecutor who moved forward to get a warrant with absolutely no evidence? The judge who approved the warrant based on zip?

The scope of this failure is absolutely insane. Everyone is going to sit around and say “well it’s not really our fault” when literally all of them are at fault.

  9. Okay… so is it not well known that AI facial recognition is not reliable enough to use for something like this? I wonder how easy the lawsuit would be for this

„Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of the human mind“. Jesus H. Christ, this incompetent department needs disbanded and this AI company liquidated.

Voters need to CRACK DOWN on this shit: refuse to vote for any politicians who don’t support police accountability and regulations on AI. Hound the incumbent politicians on these issues. The 4th and 5th amendments must be upheld.
