Explanation: What are these Earthlings trying to tell us? The featured message was broadcast from Earth towards the globular star cluster M13 in 1974. During the dedication of an upgrade to the Arecibo Observatory – then the largest single radio telescope in the world – a string of 1’s and 0’s representing the diagram was sent. This attempt at extraterrestrial communication was mostly ceremonial – humanity regularly broadcasts radio and television signals out into space accidentally. Even were this message received, M13 is so far away we would have to wait almost 50,000 years to hear an answer. The featured message gives a few simple facts about humanity and its knowledge: from left to right are numbers from one to ten, atoms including hydrogen and carbon, some interesting molecules, DNA, a human with description, basics of our Solar System, and basics of the sending telescope. Several searches for extraterrestrial intelligence are currently underway.

  2. Why have they sent it towards a globular cluster? I’ve read that there are so many stars in those that it’s very likely that at least some of them exploded nearing end of life wiping out any life in the cluster. So, these things are probably sterile.

  3. It always bugs me that I whenever I see this picture, it’s always multi-colored. Am I correct that the transmission was binary-only and the color was not transmitted? (The color is only included here to clarify the different sections?)

This is the best humanity could come up with? I’m human and I’m not sure wtf this is supposed to be.

  5. Wasn’t it sent to where M13 was at the time, not where it will be in 20,000 years when the signal could have gotten there?

  6. The first row with white dots are the binary representation of the numbers 1-10.

The purple and green things are something about DNA, amino acids or something, if I remember correctly.

The white and blue stuff is a visual approximation of DNA.

The red human figure is what we look like and the white thing is maybe the number of people on earth. I don’t really remember this one.

The yellow stuff is the planets in the Solar system and one of them is raised towards the human to indicate our position.

The big purple thing is the antenna used to send the message.

The last bit is cut off.

I misread the title as a message to „MS13“ and was very confused for a few seconds.

  8. Aliens trying to decypher this: „yeah we think the line of rectangles towards the bottom is supposed to represent their solar system but it doesn’t quite match our observations. They don’t seem to have nine planets.“

  9. The artificial light patterns we radiated for the past 130 years would probably be a lot more meaningful as indication of intelligent ( well somewhat) life.

  10. Hopefully this message did not get into the hands of anyone out there in the dark forest….

Fun fact about the Arecibo message. The resolution is 23 by 73 bitmap image. Totalling to 1679. This is what is known as a semiprime number. A semiprime number is a number who’s product of two other prime numbers. This number was chosen as it could be arranged in rectangle in only two ways. 23 columns, 73 rows. Or 73 columns, 23 rows.

Semiprimes are also used in cryptography and number theory. It hinkle they’re cool numbers.

Well the Voyagers have our pictures, or address and our sweet mixtape

  13. Looks like space invaders… lol. Yeah as others have said it was a symbolic gesture. Not meant as a literal signal for any intelligent life.

#teampluto I don’t care that it doesn’t really fit the definition. It will always be a planet to me.
