The author notes that in the wake of the US school bombing in Iran LLMs got the blame. But in reality LLMs had very little to do with the targeting system used. What happened was an outdated database that no one bothered to check. But how could they? The system was meant to make 1000 targeting decisions per hour.

Over the course of decades, military planers made a series of decisions, ostensibly meant to optimise and compress the „kill chain“ in order to offset American strategic disadvantages in war. This led to the creation of a labyrinthine self-reinforcing system of targeting which became dominated by the chasing of metrics instead of actual strategic advantage and accuracy.
