The runway wasn’t big enough for Ryanair jets, that’s why Knock and Kerry are still going strong today and it isn’t, although the coast guard base has probably kept it from going completely under like Galway.

Interesting story from the airport, in 2002 a plane carrying Aslan ended up with it’s nose in the sea after overshooting the runway. Everyone was okay but the plane was a write off. You can still see the plane parked beside the runway today, they’ve kept it for use as a fire training aid.

  2. It’s a lovely airport. Flew in and out of it a few times when the Dublin flights were running.

The same staff member would check you in, manage luggage and do security… Those were the days!

  3. It’s likely to be the future base of the new Air Ambulance for the north west in addition to Rescue 118. Amazing place to learn to fly too, the scenery is just breathtaking from the air.

  5. Flew into the airport on a weekend about 20 years ago. Fantastic it was . The return flight was cancelled due to fog so we ended on a bus to Dublin . Not so fantastic .
