Well… when things go poorly more often than not, that expectation becomes a realistic anticipation

What if the realistic view of the world is, well, not great?

I think the lines are getting blurred between being chronically unhappy, and being clinically depressed. They aren’t the same thing but likely present very similarly.

    3. Not sure how you keep an optimistic view in this world. I guess ignorance is bliss.

I mean, yeah. I understand this article is about the science behind it, but this is pretty obvious to me, as someone with chronic depression.

Depression isn’t alleviated by a change in conditions or environment. I can be in a crowded room, seeing my favorite musician perform, perfect weather, bills paid and money in my pocket, and I’ll still be thinking about how I’m not doing good enough in life.

I can use logic and say “oh but I’m doing better than I was, things aren’t so bad.” But depression doesn’t care about that.

When I was a kid we had a saying..

„Life sucks, and then you die“

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there *just* a study that found people with more pessimistic views were correct a higher percentage of times than optimistic people were?

The real world is pessimistic right now so I’m not sure I agree.

Define genuine pessimistic bias. Define realistic view of the world. If you observe the world, read history and listen to everyone on this planet telling their stories, there’s no way you don’t get a pessimistic bias too. Or…. Well, they’re having a genuine optimistic bias.

What you _choose_ to do about it is where you get defined as sick or healthy.

Now, does that imply that every blissful person is also chronically a aware of reality ? Isn’t that a bias too ? Shouldn’t _they_ be treated and medicated so as to set their attention on the issues that exist and be affected by tragedy and invest their time and lives in the meaningful reduction of the collective suffering ? instead of spending their lives in a totally mythical world built on biases too, and spending their money carelessly and selfishly and… Oh, I see where this comes from.

Pessimistic biases don’t spend as much, so they’re an issue for the whole. Got it.

    9. I have always been a very pessimistic person and look at things half empty and…well yeah it makes me depressed. Hard to change my brain after 15 years of this

I have had depression bad over the years in random stretches. Job loss, child birth and the changes to my old life and relationship with my wife not being just us even though our daughter is amazing and [perfect](http://perfect.is)

    10. This is what made my first episode so hellish. I KNEW this. I didn’t think I was somehow seeing clearer than everyone else. The state of the world could’ve sucked but my slice of the world was perfect. I was early 20s, considered very good looking, making a lot of money and financially stable, yet couldn’t shake the fact that I wanted to… yeah. I felt like I was always behind a window waiting to be let into the real world and it was torture. Everything looked dead but I knew it wasn’t dead and would’ve done anything to see the sun again.

This is similar to something I’ve been thinking about recently: Am I dumb because there are so many things on this planet that I don’t understand, or am I actually smart because I stop and ask myself how does (blank) work.

CBT has been around for a long time. A part of CBT is learning about these biases so you can be aware of them and counteract them.

    13. Cause meet effect.

Please define „a realistic world“. Sunshine and rainbows? Congratulations.

And there’s studies that say the exact opposite… why do people post these definitive headlines when that’s not what any single study ever does

    15. nostalgiamancer_ on

Nah, my view of the world is pretty real and unbiased. It’s not really pessimism to understand this is objectively all meaningless. You can give your meaning to life, but we’re here completely randomly.

Depression doesn’t care about nuances. It takes any evidence to use it against you.

There are also studies that show that a negativity bias is an evolutionary advantage. So, what is a realistic viewpoint?

    18. My wife says I don’t suffer from depression that I just get a case of the sads, like who is she to know what’s going on in my head?

    19. Grouchy-Handle-6031 on

A realistic view of the world is a pessimistic view. Perhaps I’m depressed?
