  1. It’s so weird that Carney would admit that the Liberals apparently lost control under Immigration Ministers Marc Miller and Sean Fraser, but continue to employ them in prominent positions in his cabinet.

  2. >You’ve seen temporary worker numbers down by 50 per cent, asylum claims down by a third,” he said. “New foreign student numbers down by 60 per cent since this government came in, and 100 per cent investigations since 2025, which is as long as I’ve been prime minister.

It’s like saying there’s only a little bit of flooding in your basement that’s already underwater.

Not to mention it doesn’t address the vetting problems and the myriad of corporate entities supporting this mess.

Who doesn’t love some wage suppression?

What’s said as opposed to what’s done. I’ve been hearing a lot about walking back the drastic cuts that Canadians are expecting from and promised by the Federal Government.

I hope Carney keeps talking like this about this file. About time his polling numbers start going down.

  5. Carney has to keep this immigration reduction till 2028 or so then keep population growth capped at max 1% a year.

  6. He is just going to find sneaky ways to keep them coming in at the same rate under different programs etc.

  7. Carney is the immigration king. The big “century initiative”. He is just going to appease with nonsensical whimpy little changes and do what ever he wants.

Well, that’s interesting that the period that’s being referred to is 2022, 2023, 2024… that’s not Carney but the article did point out the massive drops from 2025, which was Carney. Not surprising Carney is defending what his office is doing. Why would Carney take the blame for Trudeau’s numbers?

Still admitting a million PR every 3 years, still far faster than we can build homes for the people we have let alone the ones coming in.

Just watch, as soon as he gets that majority in April, the floodgates are going to be wide open again. Anything for those dividends.

Just so people know. The report says immigration should be higher for students and the decline is bad. So don’t act as if this is something you want and start piling on.

People in the comments once again proving they didn’t read the article or apply any sort of brain power to form a coherent thought.

Oh please. The people who lost control under Trudeau are in your Cabinet today.

So is it finally generally accepted that the Trudeau government was not governing competently? Good government is boring bureaucracy and paperwork and not press conferences and announcements…

This is not about Conservative or Liberal. That tribalism is what the powers that be want. Turn your anger at big companies like Walmart, Tim Hortons, Can Tire etc that twists the arms of politicians to get cheap subsidized labour.
Stephen Harper opened the program up to the wider industries and Trudeau doubled down on it. Banks and the government are terrified of population decline because it means less revenue and taxes
The people of Canada need a party that is there fir the people……not dividends.

  16. Ah yes dismissing the findings of an auditor. Very conservative thing to d-wait a minute….

  17. Guys I think we should give them a majority government, I’m sure it will be fine.

Carney will attract better talent. Unfortunately he has to play with the hand he was dealt.

Same party disasters making everything worse for Canadians. Different leader that has been in the background advising the LPC since 2020. What could go wrong? Can we be dense enough to vote them in again or give them a majority. Hope not.

    >“A new report by the auditor general’s office showed Canada’s immigration department in a two-year period only investigated a fraction of the 153,000 international students flagged for non-compliance and potential fraud.“
    >“Compared to the Harper government, the last sane policy on immigration, we have asylum claims are now up to 2,880 per cent, temporary foreign workers up 178 per cent, international students up 39 per cent,” said Poilievre, while reiterating his call for Carney to fire his three ministers.

Even when the Liberals say they are reducing numbers and getting things ‚under control‘, the numbers are still double our historical norms. Unemployment is still rising, rents are still too high, and food bank usage off the charts. All *indicators* of unsustainability.
Carney is taking back control of immigration, from… themselves??! He says they like they weren’t even the ones in charge of that department…

  21. Midnightrain2469 on

How do you take back control when for the last 10 years, the LPC never had any?

There are multiple factors like dropping birthrates (since 1945) plus the fact we lose 325,000 citizens a year to passing away. According to government stats we have have been below the break-even point of population replenishment since about 1972. We are at roughly half of what we need to break-even on population replenishment in the birth-rate category. Just to maintain current levels! We do need better management of who and how many we bring into Canada but it is clear we need immigration to support all of our infrastructure demands, there is no way around it.

The same housing minister who later became the immigration minister now serving as your Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Sean Fraser? Or Marc Miller (also former immigration minister) who’s now the Minister responsible for Official Languages? Or is it Marco Mendicino (former immigration minister) now the Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister?

    Disgusting

Didnt he literally just say that Canada is now siblings or best friends with India???
