These guys have just burned through so much goodwill. I’m very pro union. But multiple agreements and multiple strikes over the last 5 years is not a great look unfortunately
I know what will fix this: Allowing this same change resistant union along with incompetent Canada Post management (the combination of which results in a postal company that loses over a billion dollars a year) to now move into the low margin world of day-to-day banking while handing out risky payday loans with taxpayer money.
I need a good YouTube video guy to summarize each side of this one. Everything I’ve read seems to claim that Canada Post is hamstrung into a terrible business model while the unions are unwilling to give up a single job for the sake of survival of Canada Post.
Are they risking it all for the sake of a few jobs or are they counting on the feds to just keep paying the short falls?
I don’t want to speak for the whole union but since other union members haven’t contributed yet I’ll add my $.02
Our union leadership is split, the majority support this deal and encourage us to ratify it. A minority of the board voted against it. Our constitution requires the dissenters to provide an explanation, that’s what this is.
Now from my perspective they can get fucked. It’s a fair deal. Some members don’t agree but they’re realistic and understand there’s no way we can get more. I don’t think anyone wants another strike outside of a few oldtimers (the executives voting no) that want to go out on their shield, or make a name for themselves.
My hope is that it’s ratified. And members send a message that we have no confidence in them by also voting no on the strike vote. They have no mandate and should resign. I expect a few harder line employees will respond here with a dissenting opinion, which is fair, and why unions are so challenging – Democracies vs dictatorships.
