  1. Voters will write the name of the person they are voting for on their ballot. They will be given a list of every candidate running (If I remember correctly from last time, candidates who were affiliated with a party were at the top of the list, not mixed in with independents).

I wonder how long results will take on election night – I can’t remember how long it took for all polls to be reporting in Battle River-Crowfoot last summer (A much less competitive race!).

  2. I wouldn’t mind if we put a small but not meaningless deposit of say, $1,000 or thereabouts to become a candidate. The deposit gets refunded if the candidate receives over 3 percent of the vote. That way no one trying to run a serious campaign gets seriously hindered but it provides some friction to prevent this kind of nonsense.

While I do not live in the riding, so my opinion does matter less. I am perfectly fine with this compromise. I understand what Longest Ballot Committee is doing and I think it’s fine.

I also do not want to come up with laws or rules to prevent them as I am aware those laws and rules can be used against us if an unfavorable government is elected that wants to take advantage of those laws. Looking down south and the disenfranchisement that happens is really frustrating

  4. This probably slightly benefits the Bloc, given that anybody who is illiterate or doesn’t speak French probably wouldn’t be voting for them.

I look forward to the day in which parliament finally decides to legislate this away and we never have to hear about this „longest ballot committee“ ever again. It’s just ridiculous that we have such an important byelection, and these clowns get to disrupt it for their own egos.
