My „top comment“ was removed because it was less than 50 words. I wanted to keep it brief and leave my opinions out for a bit but here we are.
The Secretary of State for Nature Provost interrupts the Minister for Public Safety, and seems like the only person happy to be there. They’re dismissive of any critique and call anyone who does have issues with the program part of the gun lobby. Questions from the reporters are mixed, one gets super focused on what gun was used in Tumbler Ridge instead of asking more details about the program.
Watch for yourself and form your own opinions, the briefing is just over 16 minutes including questions.
I find it super funny that Provost is there saying that the „gun lobbyist in Canada“ are the ones pushing misinformation.
Meanwhile public safety keeps repeating the assault style non sense. They’re a little over the 50k declared mark and that’s abysmally low when you realize how many actual prohibited firearms exist in Canada after multiple OICs.
That doesn’t even mean that they’ll even see the same number when collection time rolls around (especially since barely any province is supporting this + lots of cop shops opted out, rcmp is also having its own problems).
Not to mention those OICs are getting challenged in the supreme court which probably throws a wrench in things (not that this program was ever going to function).
What a fiscally irresponsible waste of tax money. Absolutely shameful.
Well, if this update was supposed to reassure people that this is going well, it didnt work.

„51,000 guns have been signed up for the buyback“
reporter „that doesnt sound like a lot“.
lol, no it is not. the 133k target is already nowhere near the total number of affected firearms(1-2 million), thats mostly just the AR15s only and a few thousand other uncommon previously Restricted firearms. The bulk of the ban is on previously non restricted firearms, which were much more popular.
133k is the least they can get away with saying are expected, because all of those are registered, and the easiest segment to enforce confiscation for. Regardless, it looks like they have already burnt the budget for this, and the vast majority of firearms owners would not be given compensation.
That would be why Provost(who shouldnt even be there, as it is both not her file, and she is literally an anti gun lobbyist, conflict of interest imo) is repeatedly pleading for people to turn their stuff in and get ripped off.
