He genuinely doesn’t know how to descalate. The only card he knows how to play is continuously escalate until the other party backs off. It might work when bullying small countries economically, but doesn’t make a lick of sense when you’re dealing with a regime that fears that they may not survive another 6 months.

They’ve been throwing everything at the wall and hoping it sticks, and it seems like they’ll continue to do so in the next week. By the time they figure nothing works, they would be finding it very difficult to descalate, which is what they should’ve done when they realised that they are not achieving their strategic goals.
