This is my first time putting together a map like this. I checked quite a few sources, but I’m sure there are still mistakes, and many of these names have more than one proposed origin, so I just went with the more commonly cited explanations. At the very least, it’s better than that post from a few days ago.
Taiwan?
Qinghai may also be from the Mongolian „Koke nuur“ which also means blue lake.
Did they rename Tibet?
i want to see what each province thinks of the other. Surely there is a backwards province which the others hate
I am missing a lot of cultural memes because of the language barrier. Same thing with countries like Indonesia and Brazil
I love Gansu, I feel its gives you a China within a province
Wow, an actual good map on this sub.
There is no „restored“ in 新疆 xin jiang. xin: new jiang: territory
Thank you for including the names in Chinese. I hate the ones (all of the so far…) that just put some nonsense English transliteration without the original version.
My dad’s side of the family is from Heilongjiang and it’s easily the coolest sounding province.
Shanghai is literally above the sea, is it contracted hence the different meaning shown?
Xinjiang is wrong. New Territory.
Where’s mount hua tho
Source for Taiwan? Siraya yes, but all literature I’ve read points to it coming from an ethnonym of the Taivoan/Tevorang subgroup of the Siraya, with any further depth lost to time.
Get Taiwan outta that map
I think the problem with your map is the opposite to the ones that you were mentioning, it goes *too* deep into the etymology that it adds a lot of stuff that isn’t a part of what the names literally mean
It’s like if you put the Etymological meaning of the City of Portland as „The Island of the Land of the Port on the English Channel“. (Might not be the best example, but it gets the point across)
It’s not a *wrong* etymology, but personally i feel it might be a bit misleading (?)
I was going to say „and yet another map…“ But this one is actually good and intelligible. Well done.
Tianjin is actually „Kingsport“
