> Work from home where possible to save petrol.
What about Pret?
Im hoping this will result in remarkably fewer cars on the road. Like the early days of lockdown
They are under no compulsion to comply and higher gas prices benefit the rich and powerful so this is a pointless recommendation.
Boomer and Gen X managers won’t like that.
Was speaking to someone today who said someone they know who worked in Dubai was told they couldn’t work remotely abroad and had to go into the office, the office in a city that was basically being evacuated every day because of the bombings. They expected people to potentially die for their job, just for the sake of having bums in seats at the office.
This wasn’t an Arab run company either, it was a British company running in Dubai (which I guess is a redflag as any company running from Dubai is probably run by tax dodging cunts). British management culture is demented honestly.
I’m in an EV and I already work from home full time, so this won’t affect me apart from the roads being quieter.
Honestly, bikes are good for us all. And even going fast they cause much less harm than those big heavy motor vehicles, say.
BUT BUT BUT…. THE BUILDING PORTFOLIOS!!!!! WONT ANYONE THINK ABOUT THE BUILDING PORTFOLIOS!!!….
Tell that to my fucking company trying to up the number of days in the office because they feel like it or some shit.
makes sense for those who can to work from home anyway, not everyone can but its still a reduction in fuel use
not sure messing with speed limits matters, cars do well when flowing more than stop start, when roads are busy you are not near the limit anyway, and when they are not it probably doesn’t make much difference
could be worth reminding people that gentle acceleration and looking ahead will save plenty of fuel though
Well done Evil Benjamin and Orange Spray-Paint Man. Fkd it. Remember, we’ve got to say thank you to them for all this, according to Nazi Pete.
Work from home, no don’t work from home, work from home.
Anyone else getting mixed messages? Seems kinda like the majority of the worlds governments actually have zero clue on how to actually govern.
I can’t wfh, but I’d be happy to return to the clear roads and lower fuel prices of the pandemic when everyone else was stuck inside.
I was thinking about buying a cheap motorbike at some point in the near future to save money on commuting.
Well I’m now picking it up next week.
Just to test it out, I drove home at 57mph the other day and got over 70mpg (in a hybrid petrol Juke)
If you can work from home, and your job doesn’t physically require you to be in a seat because a business is paying rent, it should be legally protected.
I am so much happier on work from home days, than when I’m forced to go to the office, and I know many other people feel the same.
The people that want to go to the office all day, be my guest….I just don’t want to be forced to.
>3. Encourage public transport to reduce oil demand.
>4. Limit car access to roads in large cities through a number-plate rotation scheme.
Yikes! Good luck getting any of that past the local 15 city conspiracy theorists!
I’m surprised cycling hasn’t been mentioned, the oil crisis of the 70’s was a major push for the Netherlands to pursue bicycles as a method of transport. [Given that 70% of trips are under 5 miles](https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/national-travel-survey-2024/nts-2024-mode-share-and-multi-modal-trips), with the right leadership & infrastructure investment, **this trip length** could be a huge cost, carbon, health & time benefit for country.
[Hell, cycling for transport was seriously considered during the 70’s oil crisis in the UK as well.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_VB7O8OgLwY)
This part is for the British exceptionalism enthusiasts:
-Gears & these new fangled electric bicycles have been invented, negating nearly all hills.
-Water proof clothing such as [overtrousers](https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/100-city-cycling-rain-overtrousers-with-built-in-shoe-covers-black/169380/c382m8402040) have been invented. Also I can assure you it rains all the time in the Netherlands as well.
-[Pannier racks & bags](https://carradice.co.uk/products/super-c-a4-pannier?variant=48514924446023&country=GB¤cy=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOoqdk7MKXF_I1tgr6qAKITccyBjZ90nueNWMK_KgyXmKFjTJqD2KE94) can easily carry ~30kg, many are also water resistant. I can fit my weekly shop in a pair.
-Cargo bikes can be used to transport more goods in urban areas, as they already are in many cities in Europe. Increasingly in London too.
-Cargo bikes are frequently used to transport kids in the Netherlands, so could also help out families.Or for moving larger things.
-Cycling for shorter journeys & using other methods for longer ones is what a lot of people in the Netherlands already do. I’m not expecting people to cycle from Basidon to London! Directly translating to fuel, depreciation & maintenance savings for an individual who also drives.
-The modern safety bicycle (i.e. every “normal” looking bike) was literally invented in Coventry!
Well (slaps knees)… Time to break out the oil wars BDSM gear.
We need the workers rights bill to accelerate the right to work from home into law ASAP. We don’t have time to wait. If you don’t need to physically be present than it should be a legal right to work from home. Why do we have to wait for so many consultation bullshit to occur?
Boris has returned I see.
Work from home, but don’t work from home ..
Slow down on the road, but don’t slow down in case you’re late to work ..
Use less fuel, but don’t use less fuel because it will harm the economy..
COVID round 2 bring it on !!!
