  1. Isn’t it just execs thinking this? Most people would perhaps choose to see one on Thursday and the other one a few days later.

Or maybe people will see both, and the movie theaters can survive a little longer.

I remember Barbie and Oppenheimer opening on the same day and nobody called for a move. Seems like manufactured controversy for hype.

I’ll see Doomsday and then nod along politely for the next year while everyone talks about that other movie.

Release them on the same day and let the commons vote with their dollars.

  6. WB has the high ground here for Dune 3. They have ALL the IMAX screens reserved for 3 weeks.

Unless Disney wants to buy them out of that 3 week window, which would probably cost more than it’s worth.

I saw both Barbie and Oppenheimer and considered both movies excellent in their own way. If it’s that important to people they can see one on a Friday and the other on Saturday or vice versa.

I think Disney knows they’re about to get crushed. Dune 3 is highly anticipated and I feel like maybe I’m out of the loop but does anyone care about this phase of Marvel at all?

It’s Barbenheimer 2.0, I don’t see how this isn’t a win for theaters with people spending 5 hours in the theater buying multiple tickets, popcorn refills etc.

  10. Some will love tacky hero costumes, some will like good cinema. Plenty to choose from.

  11. > Insiders say Disney and Marvel is unwavering in its decision to stick with the date, despite Dune‘s Imax exclusivity. While Imax and premium large format screens are in hot demand, there are plenty of regular screens

I keep saying that Disney and Marvel don’t want to move. They have a live countdown counting down to 18 Dec since January going on. It would be a terrible look if they blinked and moved now. They also likely knew months ago that they weren’t getting IMAX in the US for 3 weeks and they still went ahead with the 4 teasers citing 18 Dec + the countdown clock. It will open in IMAX in some int markets according to IMAX themselves tho. Spidey too.

They crunched the numbers ages ago and decided they want the December holiday money more than the IMAX money. Endgame made 207m globally from IMAX, 7.39% of its total gross. I guess IMAX is more popular now in the US than back then but they probably still don’t think it’s worth it sacrificing the December slot and also pushing their entire slate several months back. There’s no way Secret Wars comes less than 12 months apart from DD.

Also I bet they’ll re-release the movie in IMAX once Dune’s exclusivity window is done

Nah let’s drop em both on the same day and do a double feature.

Barbenheimer was a lot of fun.
