  1. How is Mexico backsliding? I’ve heard about authoritarian shifts in the other countries, but Mexico not so much.

Lol I find it hilarious that this map doesnt measure most of western europe countries – how convinient

This is incredibly baseless because India or Nicaragua(actual dictatorship) cannot be becoming authoritarian at a rate slower than Hungary’s

  4. Afghanistan in a better position than India?? I know we’re slipping fast, but not that fast.

Edit: I get that it’s a change, but we’re not falling that fast. At least the popular opinion seems to be going against the ruling party and the PM in the last few months.

Somehow there’s a lot of people who simultaneously hate Trump and stan for AMLO and Sheinbaum

Save Serbia… We don’t want to be the annoying wannabe badboi of Europe… 🙁

  7. This map is stupid. India’s problem is too much democracy to the point it hinders growth.

  8. Didn’t Thailand have the army calling the shots and go on a minor war with Cambodia or something?

The org that put this together, V-Dem, really quantifies democratic optics rather than actual political power held by the citizenry.

And this, my friends, is what soft propaganda looks like. In a few years, when India’ll start doing even better, you’ll see many more reports from “human rights” groups, “minority” support groups, “democractic backsliding” groups, India’s “press freedom” groups, etc etc.

I remember reading this one bullshit report that placed India’s press freedom below North Korea, and another which ranked Gaza, as in the active war zone phase over India, don’t remember what the report was about.

To those of my friends who are not from the American hegemonic Anglosphere, I implore you, take these with huge pinches of salt.

Brazil is not becoming more democratic; President Lula is certainly less authoritarian than Bolsonaro, but the judges of our Supreme Court have unlimited power to do whatever they want.

They are far more powerful than the president or congressmen and don’t need to be elected.

Inaccurate the US is absolutely not democratic. Do we democratically make decisions in the workplace ? Also see: electoral college. Representative democracy is not democracy, especially when all of those representatives are corrupt.

  13. Canada with 0? We had multiple floor crossers who were bribed, and Carney has completely bulldozed through legislation without consultation multiple times now.

lol I just love these rankings. Given by liberals to liberals.

So somehow Poland is democratizing, but what is it based on? I’m polish and I voted for our current government, but what did they really do in terms of democratizing? That’s an honest and genuine question.

It’s like the EU was withholding funds for Poland when right wing government was ruling the country, based on “breaking the rule of law” (which they absolutely did with their broken reforms). But somehow the liberal government wins, they didn’t do anything to the justice system, it’s still the same broken one, cause they also can’t due to several factors. But the facts are that it’s the same exact system. But somehow now we follow the rule of law, and we are democratic, and the EU sent us the funds.

So there’s no world in which I trust those rankings.

Spain is 100% autocratising. Pedro Sánchez is a power hungry piece of shit who made deals with independists in order to keep himself in power for 4 more years.

    Brazil

Democratizing… with it’s own version of Online Safety Act going online today.
