  1. Wolves had disappeared from the eastern Italian Alps by the early 20th century.

In 2011, a GPS-collared male wolf from Slovenia known as Slavc dispersed west across the Alps, traveling several hundred kilometers into northeastern Italy.

There he paired with a female wolf from the expanding Italian population that had been moving north from the Apennines. Their offspring formed the Lessinia pack in 2012, the first confirmed breeding wolf pack in the eastern Italian Alps in modern times.

Since then, wolves have continued to recolonize the Alpine region. Recent monitoring estimates around 1,000 wolves across the Italian Alps today.
