You can’t legalize pepper spray, unless you treat it like a weapon with permit licensing processes, and all the admin costs that goes with it.
If you don’t do that, then any idiot will be using it in public places, restaurants, public transportation, etc. or women might use it on innocent bystanders as soon as they feel „unsafe“.
The latter is what needs to be working on: women should not feel unsafe in our society, but supplying them with a „weapon“ is the exact problem that the US is having: everyone wants a gun because they feel unsafe, but nobody wants to address the underlying issues leading to this feeling.
Wow, what a great way to give assailants cover for carrying a weapon! What are the consequences when someone inevitably discharges it in a crowded area, indiscriminately harming everyone around them? It’s too bad that the Ontario PCs would rather pitch hairbrained ideas like this instead of tackling the root causes of crime.
With our backwards approach to self defense generally, I don’t see how pepper spray solves any problems. You could legitimately use pepper spray and still catch charges. To boot, like with a lot of things, pepper spray isn’t something I off hand trust people to use competently.
