The sentiment is admirable but too idealistic; the current state of affairs with an aggressive and imperialistic Russia who are essentially in another Cold War with the West is the reality we’re dealing with. The US can’t be relied on anymore – they rightly wanted Europe to carry more responsibility for its own defence but then swung too far into the crazy. Re-arming, re-strategising, utilising the best parts of our allies and working together, in the hope none of it is ever needed, is prudent and sensible. Frankly, a good chunk of Europe haven’t got the luxury of Ireland, with NATO and nuclear armed powers between them and any aggressor.
