One of the things I don’t understand about Lewis’s campaign messaging (or at least insofar as how it’s being covered) is I don’t hear much talk about forcing the breaking up of oligopolies. Lewis points out there are only *x* real players in *y* industry with multiple examples, whether that be groceries, telecoms, energy, etc., which is true and I like he shines a spotlight on that, it’s the kind of thing that can really resonate with people if played up properly, but instead of talking about forcing the breakup of these companies/empires like Galen Weston Jr’s (one of the most-hated uber-wealthies in Canada), which is what’s really needed to chip away at the problems they create in their sector creating higher costs for all of us as that’s how oligopolies roll, Lewis seems to talk more about creating a government-run competitor instead. I don’t think that’s a viable avenue that will create the results he’s going for. I’m not against having the government being a player in some of these sectors (though there are some where it makes less sense than others), but betting the shop on this strategy feels misguided. He’s tapping into a message that is right for the moment as it dovetails with the cost of living crisis and gets to the root causes, but the prescription he’s writing feels like it could miss the mark. I’d like to be wrong, but I’m concerned.
Lewis’s only demand the next time the NDP holds the balance of power is proportional representation. Sounds good to me, we don’t need to become a two-party system outside of Quebec.
