The author doesn’t come out and say it, but it’s completely transparent that Conservatives are trying to get him honora to send a message that it’s okay to be a racist crackpot. The only point of any of it is to make racism acceptable again.
Of course PP and Danielle jumped at the chance for another culture war.
What we need less of is needless culture wars.
How about solving this financial subsistence crisis where we not only can’t afford to buy a house we can’t afford to build houses or groceries.
Now unemployment is about the skyrocket and we’ve decided our capital is best spent on microchips and computers to replace everyone’s jobs.
Maybe we could start being vocal about this issue, the real issue, not more needless culture wars.
The last thing we want is having politicians in charge of selecting people to the Order.
They want to recommend? Fill the recommendation letter like any other Canadian can do. The Order’s Advisory Council will then make the final selection for the GG’s final decision.
I liked Don Cherry more than any self respecting progressive should of, but I’m blown away at how little support he has among the general population.
It really does seem like the only people in favour of Cherry getting the Order are a fringe of conservatives who want to make a point about their politics, and a couple of Conservative politicians who are trying to get in the news.
I guess…good for us? I am surprised though.
Supporting Don Cherry for the Order of Canada is a stupid hill to die on.
What about fighting for affordable housing? Lower cost of living?
You know, I really had no opinion on who received the order, as it wasn’t a military order, and thus… kinda pointless in my mind.
But I looked into the criteria required to receive the award (and yes, it’s an award, not a military service medal), and I kinda can’t deny that Cherry *could* be awarded it.
To win one, one must meet the following criteria:
> it recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
I think few would deny that Canada’s most iconic (though not official) sport, is hockey.
I think few would deny that Cherry was dedicated to the sport of hockey, even if they aren’t his biggest fans.
I think few could argue that he didn’t achieve much in terms of his own professional career, featuring on one of the longest hockey segments in our nation’s history.
Finally, though the manner in which he supported our nation may be off-putting to many (even to myself), it’s pretty undeniable he had a “Canada first” mindset…
Seems like the guy can win this award through meeting the criteria established by the Crown.
It’s just a way for the government to say “you did something for our country”, and I don’t think many can deny that his contributions to hockey, and to the “Canada brand” aren’t recognizable.
