Giorgia Meloni has long pitched nuclear energy as a cure for Italy’s wilting economy. Now her government is plotting how to actually resurrect the banned technology.

Almost 40 years after Italy shuttered its last nuclear reactor — and 15 years after a failed attempt to reverse that decision — the prime minister’s team is consulting experts and holding discussions on how to restart atomic energy production, according to people familiar with the planning.

Italian officials have traveled to Canada to explore technology designs, and spoken to French officials about their nuclear industry, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The government has also internally discussed South Korean and US options, they added.

Rolls Royce has the solution. It’s called a SMR (Small Modular Reactor).

  3. they could have invested in solar like Spain

but no, solar was too woke for them and now they get fucked again by raising gas prices

    what a wasted opportunity

  4. There’s so much exploring and talking and so little electricity generation with nuclear these days.

There is no more expensive electricity out there  but I know why Italy still pushes it – they have always been better at populism than calculating.

By the time we build one it will be way too late lol, it’s already late I guess

incorrect, Meloni never says nuclear power is a cure, she says bombing NGO full of immigrant is a cure for our economy. in almost 3 year she did not do anything about nuclear power, jus „exploring“ possibilities. she will „explore“ the nuclear world till her mandate is ended.

  7. Omg there’s a fuel crisis. Let’s switch to another technology with a different fuel which is more dangerous, even harder to get and insanely expensive.

People talk about nuclear like if doesnt cost billions, delays, overcosts, etc…

it is 2026, nuclear was the solution in 1980, just use the same billions improving the grid, and adding more and more reneable energies combine with batteries.

the UK new nuclear central is getting delays after delays and the cost on the billions extra are mounting, do you really think this will bring cheaper energy prices?

They had one of the strongest majority in the like last 10 years of Italian government and still didn’t do anything about it yet, it’s just words to try and get some votes from the nuclear friendly groups

  10. Let’s fight high energy costs with the second most expensive form of energy generation, nuclear. Just brilliant.

  11. „Consulting experts and holding discussions“

Any day now nuclear brainwashed people in this sub. Any day! 2040+ and we will be so much more independent and green with our one overpriced reactor. It is so smart!

And since we, of couse, will get new NPPs in the future, we won’t have to do anything at all in the next 15 years they are basically already here! Leave the old power plants running, it is solved with our new plant 2045!

  12. Exploring the most expensive option in order to lower prices. Can’t make that up.

  13. residential and balcony solar plus batteriesis the quickest way to ease prices. especially with the big drops in lithium prices

  14. I wonder how they plan on lowering costs with the most expensive means of production.

I don’t expect this to go anywhere. And if it did, it would get nuked (pun intended) in another referendum

Every post it’s the same, flooded by ignorants.

600+ billions spent, highest prices in euw, one of the top polluters. Everyday you’ll see masses of Germans arguing that’s the way. Anytime nuclear is mentioned they need to discredit it ignoring every data known to mankind. They are like addicts, just one more panel I swear and we get there.

  17. What’s the point of focusing on nuclear power when it would take too long and we have an industrial system that is about to die anyway? We will not need that energy in 2040-2050, both due to demographic projections and because there is no industrial growth plan (quite the opposite). So increasing renewables is the best choice. Let’s accept (as an Italian I do too) that in tomorrow’s world we will be a smaller, marginal country because all the projections say so. Relax. Focusing on alternatives will be more than enough.
