For Japan’s long-term economic and defense interests, it should send minesweepers or other help for the US to the Middle East, sooner rather than later.
America is discovering who its real friends are. And it’s not the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Canada, Australia, or Germany. They aren’t exactly falling over themselves to help out with their shrunken militaries. And in Spain and the UK’s cases, they are trying to sabotage the US effort.
Japan must hurry and get to the Gulf while it’s still dangerous. And not dither over legalities until the matter is overtaken by events. Any competent lawyer can produce legal justifications under existing Japanese law.
When the time comes to fend off China in Northeast Asia, Americans will remember who came forward when they needed help in the Middle East.
The critical difference being and bear with me here, the Americans are the aggressors here.
Now which is it? NATO is dead and useless and America doesn’t need them or anyone else?
Or America still needs her friends and partners to project power and maintain sustained operations?
I’m hesitant to say allies because if they were American allies, they wouldn’t have been treated like they have.
And please, any Chinese aggression will be met with American response. What’s at stake there is American global homogeny.

Not sure about the bit that Americans will remember, because Ukrainians are also offering help, and yet there’s no renewed pressure (so far) on Trump admin to give them new aids. It’s also very questionable that China will want to expand the war over Taiwan to any other actors in the region, for fear that it will inadvertently invite US involvement, i.e. it will not give Japan a reason to step in unless Japan explicitly attacks first to protect Taiwan.
But I admit this is too early to tell, still no harm on the Japanese part to help Americans out anyway.
Go behind your allies back and attack Iran and when sh*t hits the fan they come crying for cooperation.
The level of willful self delusion is astounding. US has transitioned to a defensive posture in indo-pac long before the first bomb dropped in Iran. Its key assets have long been held on rotational basis and replaced with MLRs. A role reversal if you will with US going into A2AD and China give operational initiative in the first Island Chain. What Japan should do is stop pinning their hopes and dreams on US coming to fight their war, use the opportunity to push through a massive spending bill, prepare for US disengagement and a down grade in relationship while maintaining good relations.
