      For Iraq, there were 130,000 plus tens of thousands from the coalition.
      ​Iran is significantly more powerful than Iraq.

      5000 total strength wouldn’t be enough to take Kharg Island from the Iranian garrison. 5000 assault troops also likely wouldn’t be enough to do it with reasonable casualties.

      Dunno why this keeps popping up, perhaps because it makes for a good headline, but a MEU is not for a ground invasion. When the US wants to invade somewhere, it sends Army 18th ABC, Marines with a MAGTAF, and heavy Army infantry. A MEU is for ship-based regional/fleet security, and it offers a strike platform to be sure, but it’s not for launching a ground invasion. If they start to activate Army light infantry and armored units as well, I’d be more concerned. A MEU sailing with the fleet is not really something that signals ground invasion. Marines are historically (and increasingly) naval in character. They don’t have tanks, that’s the Army’s job. They have fewer infantry than the Army. What they’re good at is crisis response from the sea, and then supplementing heavier inland Army operations. But until the Army starts to deploy invasion forces as well, don’t expect an invasion.

      NONE of this is a defense of this idiocy, by the way, just trying to point out that people tend to buy into sensationalist reporting.
