  1. Submission statement:

Cuba says it will release 51 people from prison citing relations with the Vatican. This follows a promise to gradually release 500 prisoners last year after talks with the Vatican. One of the people released then was a prominent dissident who then left the island and went to the US. It’s not immediately clear if this event is related to the US naval blockade of Cuba but the announcement was made only hours before the president was scheduled to appear in a press conference „to address national and international issues.“

Thought it was because of Trump’s pressure (like with Venezuela’s prisoner release law), but seems the Vatican was involved instead? Which leads me to the question, how is the state of religion in communist-run Cuba? I know religion is repressed in other communist countries like China, but I know many Cubans are also Catholic

I think the main issue with Cuba is that the leadership is very old and that they can’t really stop internet anymore so people will see the truth and demand change and the regime needs to prepare for it.

People set up their own network selling hard drives with pirated movies as internet was illegal. It created huge rich „gangs“ selling Hollywood movies. I recall a documentary where a family bragged about finally affording a toaster after saving for a year. And while they split up the economy between Cuban and tourist prices it also makes is so that taxi drivers are very rich and doctors very poor. As taxi drivers are taking tourist prices and are paid in US dollars.

They gathered in parks where WiFi internet was legal as it was illegal anywhere else. And you had to pay per minute. With satellite internet and easily sharing info you can’t hold it back. People will uncover what the regime is doing. In North Korea they may kill you and your whole family if you are caught watching South Korean drama. So you have to watch it in secrecy even in your own home. Cuba either would need to become more totalitarian or adjust to new conditions.

Especially smart phones will become a huge problem. Cuba censors the internet extremely heavily, but you can send files from phone to phone in minutes. If there is any video or news story they could just do this all over Cuba and how will the government control it? Only one person needs to have the file for all of Cuba to get it in weeks.
