I honestly can’t tell the difference between it and cod so I’d be fine with having it on the menu.

  2. Comfortable-Law-7147 on

They have been talking about us eating pollock instead of cod for decades.

I don’t mind it and have actually deliberately brought it myself before to cook instead of cod. Most fish fingers are no longer cod or haddock due to price.

  3. supergodmasterforce on

Didn’t a lot of chip shops already switch to Pollock years ago due to concerns about the overfishing of Cod?

  4. Agreeable_Falcon1044 on

Price has gone through the roof. Ours went from a bit steep 10.50 to 13 quid this year. That’s insane.

  5. snittersnee on

Ive been going with whitebait as my preference for a while now. Small individual perfectly battered and crisp mouthfuls of tender fishflesh.

  6. Pollock is sound.

The only white fish i’m not a fan of and won’t willingly eat is basa. Taste and texture just isn’t appealing.

Who knew overfishing was bad and going to catch-up with us? The season are being irreversibly destroyed by mega-trawlers to meet consumer demand, affecting the species targeted and the thousands caught as by-catch. People were up in arms when a whale died on Blue Planet 2 but care far less about the ocean when a fish they eat is affected.

  8. Pollock is good! Just wait until they start asking you to eat Basa. Then you will miss Pollock.

  9. InspectorDull5915 on

As well as the rise in the price of Cod, the rise in energy costs, minimum wage and employers NI contribution have made running such a business more difficult.

Cod n chips is cheaper in the pub next to the chippie, with the app sometimes get money off too. Last time I braved the chip chop it was £16.50 for fish n chips with a small curry sauce, at that price I’d rather pay £3 more and go to the Indian and get a curry that I’ll have to finish off the next day so can get two meals out of it.

Pollock is really nice, better than cod tbh. I’d like to see dogfish increase in popularity, they hit our beaches in huge numbers every single tide, stupidly easy to catch, no bones and they taste great.

  12. pastyMorrisDancers on

My chippie lets you upgrade to cod for an extra charge.
Not sure why all chippies don’t do the same

  13. Basic-Week-9262 on

Like in Dads Army, Capt Mainwaring can only afford a “Snook fish cake” from the Victory cafe.😂

  14. Pollocks not much different to other fish I’ve caught and eaten from haddock cod plaice pout, they just have different flakiness and density as long as they’re freshly caught (no I don’t mean flash frozen) bass and mackerel are about as polar opposite it gets but you don’t find either in a fish n chip shop

  15. Counterpoint-4 on

Whatever happened to coley? It was common about 20 years ago but I haven’t seen it frozen in years – was really good.

  16. JoeyJoJoeJr_Shabadoo on

I’ve said for ages, if chippies just started putting „white fish“ on their menu and that white fish was whatever is currently seasonal and abundant, people would adjust. Especially if it’s a price saver.

  17. Honestly i always try to get something other than cod as we’ve been obliterating fish stocks for a while now. Eventually theres just not going to be any.

  18. ComprehensiveAd8815 on

I like pollock, if you are told what it is and not lied to and told it’s cod then it’s fine.

Fish supper is now a treat meal, regular cod n chips cost around £16 near me and is more than enough for one, a large cod and chips for £19 could easily feed two.

Some People have lost grip with reality and straying in to the abolish minimum wage gang.

  19. Pollock is lovely imo. I can’t see the difference between it and most other white fish.

  20. Important_Ruin on

Pollock is tasty, along with Haddock. Just tell me what fish I’m eating not passing pollock off as Cod or making it clear that the Fish and Chips on menu is not actually Cod but another fish.

  21. Lots of people in here are saying they can’t tell the difference anyway… if you can’t tell what you’re eating then it must be fucking shit. 😂

  22. Worried-Penalty8744 on

My cheap local has been “fish” for at least decades now. They’ve definitely served pollock/whiting/coley in the past and I assume it won’t be long before they start serving nasty nasty basa

The good one still serves haddock

  23. HussingtonHat on

Is it so weird to have like fish seasons or so.ething? Like this next 6 months is cod and we’ll switch to something else after that to let numbers pop back up?

  24. Wise_Ad_1856 on

Pollock is served and has been served as part of the fish and chip experience for a long time and only some just becoming aware of this. COD prices going up but customers moans at price, so replace the white fish with another white fish to keep prices down…. Customers na we want cod though pollock tastes bad blah blah blah… I fcking hate people 🙁

  25. Curious_Peter on

    I don’t mind Pollock,
But by god, if I order Cod, I pay Cod Prices, I better be getting a Cod.

All tastes good drenched in salt and vinegar, smothered in curry sauce on a bed of mushy peas.

  26. Haddock is my fave, hate when they try to pass off basa though – it’s awful, put me off using the chippy actually.

  27. SiriusBlack99999 on

Fish and chips (and scraps) is one of the greatest inventions ever.

  28. Pollock is arguably a tastier fish than cod or haddock anyway, and it has a firmer texture so it takes the contrast of being battered better.

Though even at £15/kg I’m not sure the fish itself is the only issue, is it? I guess there’s £7 of fish in your fish and chips, so it is more than I expected tbf. Labour, rent and energy are also major factors though and none of those are improved by serving a different fish.

The issue is that the price has gone up past „oh let’s just get a fish and chips“ into „that’s a full meal that we need to consider“ territory. And let’s be honest, sitting on a bench by the harbour eating fish and chips is *nice* but it isn’t nice compared to sitting in a nice warm restaurant having a meal with real cutlery and a drink. If McDonald’s cost £10 then no-one would go there.

Apologies for the partial shoehorn but this also shows why it was such a bad move to bend over for the EU and grant them continued fishing rights in our waters. It is probably just about sustainable to fish UK waters for the population of the UK, but it definitely isn’t sustainable to allow all of western Europe to take from it.

  29. ArtistEngineer on

It’s fairly normal in other countries to have a variety of fish types, that might change over the years as different varieties become more popular, or expensive. Often it was whatever the locally caught fish was.

Growing up in Australia, it was common to have flake (shark), or snapper as the top choices.

But then other varieties became popular, like flathead and hake.

Most of the time you just ordered „fish“ and it was whatever fish is suitable for fish and chips.

Here’s an example of typical fish’n’chips menu in Australia.

    [https://www.reddit.com/user/ArtistEngineer/comments/1rsj51p/fishnchips_menu_from_australia/](https://www.reddit.com/user/ArtistEngineer/comments/1rsj51p/fishnchips_menu_from_australia/)

  30. I ordered large fish, chips and curry sauce and they were charging £20. Not sure I can justify going again as that’s sit down restaurant money. Seems like the chippy is priced out of the weeknight treat.

  31. speedyspeedys on

Fair enough, but are they going to charge Cod prices for Pollock or will the price reflect the cheaper fish?

  32. CurmudgeonLife on

They need to do something, all the chippies in my town are now charging £5+ for a small bag of chips which is just unaffordable.

  33. Repulsive-Ad-8339 on

I’ve nothing against eating cheaper alternatives like Pollock, but ifs that going to be the case then the chip shops need to price it accordingly. You can guarantee they’d serve pollock but still try to get away with charging cod prices.

  34. Chippies boomed because it was cheap food. Sure as shit aint that anymore. We’re critically overfishing too. Unfortunately I think we’re just going to lose a lot of chippies. They simply don’t fit into the modern world.

  35. We should be eating a variety of fish anyway or the fish stocks won’t recover due to overfishing and wastage of fish which are deemed undesirable.

  36. Why isn’t pollock on the menu along with Haddock and Cod?

I used to hate the taste of pollock but these days they have bred them to taste more neutral. Once its covered in batter, salt and vinegar, few people would notice the difference in taste.

  37. Downtown-Orchid-2257 on

The last time we nipped to the chippy it was almost £10 for two (small) bags of chips and two cans of juice.

I don’t think we’ll be getting a chippy again for a long time.

Based in West of Scotland in case anyone can beat that price.

  38. £30 for fish and chips x 2 or £30 for several Chinese dishes with leftovers. Easy decision.

  39. Old_Hamster1264 on

10-12 oz haddock (large) is £6 near me in the chippy.

Alot of shops already serve pollock & whiting most people can’t taste the difference. If the menu says fish or fish n chips only it’s a good indication its not haddock or cod.

  40. coachbuzzcutt on

Just run Pollock as a cheap option and Cod/Haddock as a more deluxe option. That way you don’t lose the business for those for who getting a chippy is a ritual/habit and just want value, versus those who want quality. I don’t see why you have to serve either/or.

  41. Pollock and cod taste the same pretty much, the pollock is part of the cod family so really not much in it and tbh I don’t care both taste good

  42. I think a lot of people say ‘cod and chips’ as a generic term for fish.
Sometimes no cod at the chippys in dundee i been to.
