“We will be closely scrutinising and reporting on what’s happening with fuel prices and call out any concerning behaviour.”
Great. Call them out. I’m sure that’ll prevent profiteering.
Realistically, what is the worst that could happen? They pay a fine that is more than covered by the excess profits they have already made? I find a lot of these watchdogs are little more than theatre, designed to make people think private companies are being held to account. In reality, there is often a revolving door between regulators and the industries they are meant to oversee. That is particularly true of Ofwat.
Make the fines a multiple of the excess profits: that will work.
Anything else is punching smoke.
Government regulation can’t beat supply and demand.
Remember when the government talks about this that they add 59.5p per litre, then charge you 20% extra on top of that, so you’re paying tax on your tax. If you want to talk about profiteering, it doesn’t get much more blatant than increasing the price and charging you for the increase.
