She brings national security/sovereignty concerns.
Also, the article brings up that minister Joly said “*the Arctic region is extremely important to the Carney government and she believes* ***Idlout wants to get involved in Ottawa’s planned investments***“.
So, Idlout’s floor-crossing may have to do about securing investments for her region.
This is kind of an odd one – ideologically and politically her positions have always been on the left wing of the NDP. She even just endorsed Avi Lewis, who represents that socialist faction of the NDP, and spoke at his campaign event a few days ago. To now throw her support behind a pretty conservative LPC under Carney is a way bigger gap to jump than any of the CPC MPs.
Even Idlout a couple months ago when the rumors started said that joining the LPC would mean she wouldn’t be free to criticize the Gov’t well advocating for her constituents and Indigenous people – directly saying *“I couldn’t do a good job representing Nunavummiut „if I were forced to vote in favor of violating Indigenous peoples’ rights.”*
There is a growing democratic deficit in this country. I’m all for any party that promises to legislate away floor crossing unless the MP at a minimum spends a year sitting as an Independent first, but preferentially resigns their seat and runs in a by election for the new party they want to represent.
