Ads when you change the input on your own TV is wild. At that point you’re basically paying to watch ads.

Never hook your TV up to the network. If you need to update the firmware, do it with a USB stick.

Instead use a third party device that has no ads: Apple TV, Firestick, Chromecast, etc.

Another one that should be named and shamed is xiaomi. Forcing you to watch ads when you use many system apps on their phones.

  4. At this point, the TV i want has only:

    – screen

    – speakers

    – a bunch of HDMI and DisplayPort inputs

    – remote

TV would be going right back to were I got it the moment an ad came up. Jesus these people.

My Hisense Roku TV is blocked on the network. So it thinks it has an internet connection, but it’s blocked at the router.

  7. Correct me if I’m wrong/dumb, but can’t you just bypass this by turning the wifi off of your TV? That’s what we do on our Hisense because we use Roku instead since it’s faster and more reliable

  8. I am looking at buying a new TV at the moment and every review I read on Hisense TV’s mentioned this and how infuriating it is… Guess which brand of TV I’m not considering.

I’m about to disconnect the damn thing from the internet completely. Between that and the fact that I can’t turn off motion smoothing I’m really fucking mad I spent all this money on this shitty TV.

I have a Hisense TV and it’s just bloody ridiculous at this point. Every time you update the software, they show more ads. I’ve stopped updating and now it nags me while I’m watching a show. I’ll never buy any Hisense products ever again. What makes them think consumers will endure this.

  11. An immediate return as faulty, IMO.

Better option is to buy a computer monitor as – currently – these don’t show ads of their own, just the ads forced by your OS maker.

  12. I remember when Kindles did (still do?) this. There’s a cheaper model and it shows ads constantly. But you could rootkit it to get rid of them.

  13. Why do people connect their smart TVs to the network? Get a reliable device like Apple TV instead.

Is there any TV that doesn’t have this bullshit built in?

I’d due for a new TV, but honestly just would rather not upgrade and keep my trusty old 1080p TV that doesn’t have any baked in ads or other garbage. I just want a dumb display. I have a PC that I use for all my streaming anyway. If I wanted something that was better suited to the task, I would just buy a dedicated streaming box like a Roku or an Apple TV. I don’t need anything like this baked into the TV. It’s just going to be outdated long before the display part of the TV becomes a problem.

This is why my Hisense TV has and never will be connected to the internet

  16. My tv started bitching about agreements and updates. Instantly took it off the internet.

Just don’t connect it to the internet and get a set top box for streaming. Problem solved

  18. The Hisense sub blew up a few months ago when this updated was pushed out „accidentally“.

You had to call into customer service and get your TV manually added to an ad blacklist.

this article is crazy, and that really sucks.

but I can’t recommend enough any sort of other „box“ for your TVs. Apple TV, fire stick, whatever.

even on my X90J, TV OSes are just kinda slow and laggy the majority of time. just barely enough to function properly. the input switching ads would be annoying on hisense for sure, but being an Apple customer, I can control the whole TV from the ATV remote, and the OS is wicked fast.

then I turn on my PS5 and the input switches by itself. i almost never interact with my TV’s original OS and therefore have like..no issues.

  20. I actually really don’t like smart TVs. When if you want smart just add a dongle.

  21. i bought a hisense tv 2 / one and a half year ago. i dont see any ads when switching inputs from hdmi1 to hdmi2 or anything

I got a 42″ plasma TV from 2004 off Facebook marketplace for $25 last time I needed a TV. Ol‘ reliable, no bullshit.

we still have an old videocon TV (CRT one!) I swear I prefer the color on this one than any modern screen 😭 idk if it’s because of the nostalgia or if its simply pleasing to look at! Also, this doesn’t need any internet. I didn’t let this one go into scrap because it’s working fine and most importantly, it’s older than me🤣🤣 could be passed down as family heirloom at this rate lollll

I just think it’s really cool to look at when you want to compare how far we’ve got with technology :))

„Hardware and software laden with ads have, unfortunately, become part and parcel of modern life, but there are occasions when the hunt for revenue goes too far. “

The day it went to far was the first time it was introduced.
