Nothing says opposing authoritarian regimes like banning marches.
This the same government which is simultaneously wringing its hands about islamophobia?
>The annual Al Quds Day march in London had drawn criticism over apparent support for the Iranian regime after its organisers expressed support for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
I’m not surprised by this, the Iranian government and directly this cunt killed thousands of protesters in Iran, in no way should support be pushed for him without heavy scrutiny and restrictions, he essentially stands for the very opposite of what the western world does.
You can call the US out for what they’re doing, which I agree with you, but in no way does Iran get a free pass because the US decided to bomb them.
Edit: and yea I get the irony of banning protests, but if people truly support him, I don’t believe the UK should be tolerant towards those people in anyway, just like we call out people who support Hitler, Stalin, slavery, or US/Isreal terror bombings, we should be calling these people as well who sympathise with a leader which ruled with an iron fist killing women, children, and shooting protesters in the thousands.
While this will almost certainly draw criticism from a lot of groups, I’m not really sure what options the government really had when it’s organisers keep showing up to protests with portraits of the Ayatollah, constantly support the Iranian regime to the point of being called out by Prevent and have a general history of stirring up trouble.
It doesn’t help that the event has historically been *very* shady, it hasn’t been unusual for people at the event to explicitly express support for terrorist groups.
While I am vehemently against the Iranian regime, I quietly like idea of allowing these kinds of marches bcs it shows how much support they have in the country.
