    >**Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz**, the world’s most important energy chokepoint that carries about one-fifth of all crude oil, according to two people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue.

    >The mining is not extensive yet, with a few dozen having been laid in recent days, the sources said. But Iran still retains upward of 80% to 90% of its small boats and mine layers, one of the sources said, so its forces could feasibly lay hundreds of mines in the waterway.

    >Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which now effectively controls the strait along with Iran’s traditional navy, has the capability to deploy a “gauntlet” of dispersed mine-laying craft, explosive-laden boats and shore-based missile batteries, CNN has reported.

    >The IRGC previously warned that any ship passing through the strait would be attacked, and the channel has effectively been closed since the start of the war. The state of the strait has been described to CNN [as a “death valley”](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/09/business/oil-iran-strait-navy-economy) given the risks involved in transiting.

    >US officials said today that the US Navy had not escorted any vessels through the strait, though President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration was looking at options to do so.

    >President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday that “if Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY!”

    >**He added that “if for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before. If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction!”**

    >Trump also said during a Monday press conference that “the Strait of Hormuz is going to remain safe. We have a lot of Navy ships there. We have the best equipment in the world inspecting for mines.”

    >Nearly 15 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude production, plus another 4.5 million bpd of refined fuels, are now effectively stranded in the Gulf, CNN has reported, and producers like Iraq and Kuwait have no alternative to shipping oil through Hormuz. The G7 group of large economies have hinted they could move to release more oil to try to offset the shortages.

    >Uncertainty surrounding the ability to move oil through the waterway appeared to be causing severe volatility on the crude oil market on Tuesday, with the [price per barrel fluctuating](https://www.cnn.com/business/tracking-oil-gas-prices-vis) between more than $90 and less than $80 in a series of peaks and valleys.

So no selectively letting oil out for China? Because if they still try to do that, it’ll be super obvious where the mines are not, and renders them pointless.

  3. Lol. What a cluster fuck. Great work folks, this is only what every analyst has predicted for ages would happen…

To the people who are wondering whether this is a war crime? Pete Hegeseth committed war crimes when he [told soldiers to ignore legal advice and „Kill everybody.“](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/02/hegseth-us-soldiers-iraq-rules-engagement) The US government committed war crimes when they started[ bombing civilian boats off the coast of Venezuela](https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-administration-s-drug-boat-strikes-are-crimes-against-humanity). When they kidnapped [Venezuela’s head of state](https://opiniojuris.org/2026/02/02/the-abduction-of-a-president-shock-illegality-and-the-implications-for-human-rights-law/). When they assassinated the head of state of Iran, using unilateral force to [attack another country unprovoked](https://verfassungsblog.de/the-unwillingness-to-call-this-illegal-is-a-terrible-mistake/), and have continued to openly push for their obliteration.

Trump himself said, [„I don’t need international law“](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/08/trump-power-international-law), but it’s almost like when a country openly and repeatedly states that they have complete disregard for international law and believe that the strongest and most violent powers should always prevail, that the world becomes a more dangerous and unstable place for us all.

As someone with no clue about military stuff

Is this like mining in Cambodia where it becomes dangerous for years to come even after clean up efforts or would it be relatively easy to remove them after because the mines are trackable etc?

  6. Impressive_Bat_5763 on

A few dozen mines is a signal, not a blockade. Iran is showing it can escalate further without actually closing the strait yet.

But Trump destroyed their Navy and Airforce Must be using their Olympics Shotput champion to throw them

  8. Genuine question, where is the US Navy? I would think one carrier group could easily keep the mine laying ships away?

    1. Take control of Panama Canal.

    2. Take over a country with a massive amount of untapped oil while you ramp up national production.

    3. Get your fuck up enemy to mine the strait where goods and energy currently flow.

    4. Control the flow of goods from Asia to Europe because countries have to go the long way now.  Sell everyone all your oil.

    5. Profit.

Remember kids! Just because you don’t like someone or are ideologically opposed to their beliefs, don’t ever, *ever* underestimate them.

  10. How can they do that? They have no navy according to very reliable sources on Truth Social.

No worries! Trump has already dedicated $20B to insure tankers and other cargo vessels in case they get blown up by Iranian ordnance.

We taxpayers will be footing the bill, which means Trump is a gEnIuS for using other people’s money …

  12. leftguard44 on

Hold on, I read a different report today that said Intelligence pointed to Iran considering or preparing to mine the strait, which wouldn’t even make sense since both Iran and China still have to get ships through, and have been in small numbers. The reality is we can’t trust a damn thing either side says

  13. GamermanRPGKing on

So gas prices are gonna go up, which means shipping prices are gonna go up, on top of existing stagflation and negative job growth…. The US consumer economy is gonna get turbo fucked, yippee, can’t wait for the greatest depression

Iran saw our president walking back because he doesn’t like seeing the market drop to much and basically punked the U.S. with mining the straight basically making it unusable without mine removal now. Queue markets in free fall with this news.

  15. Mining the straight has been one of the strategies Iran has indicated it would employ in response to any US actions for a long time. This has also been something US forces have been well aware of and keen to watch for and identify just as long. What will be interesting will be the response. Will yhe straight be cleared for use or will this require a diplomatic joint solution?

  16. TurdFerguson614 on

Don’t worry, if you expel your American diplomats, we’ll give you hand drawn map from the guy that dropped the mines, so that you can pass safely.

  17. Guys it’s ok, as long you’re not at the Strait of Hormuz, those mines can’t hurt you. Just your wallet at the gas pumps.

  18. GuinnessGlutton on

I don’t understand how this is possible. Why isn’t the navy locking down the strait and keeping their mine laying crews out?

  19. mixedtickles on

Of course they are. Someone told me gas prices were going down next week.

  20. Lord_Tanus_88 on

Trump will do a deal to remove the mines and claim that was victory and the whole point to the war. Everybody should thanks America for securing trade.

  21. filenotfounderror on

You only need to lay 1 mine to make it infeasible for commercial boats to pass through.

  22. The situation is out of control, Trump hoped this was going to be easy, fast and cheap and the global economy is going down. I don’t know how is he going to stop this because I guess Israel won’t want to stop before Iran is destroyed

  23. Gee if only the US had a Navy that could stop this and actually planned ahea…………..

oh wait, They do and didn’t.

  24. FloppyCustard on

The global economy is currently held together by duct tape and prayers, and Iran just showed up with a pair of scissors
