Engineers at RMIT University in Australia have built a small robotic “Electronic Dolphin” designed to vacuum oil from the surface of water using a filter inspired by sea urchins.

The prototype device, roughly the size of a sneaker, targets one of the world’s most persistent environmental problems.

Oil spills can devastate marine ecosystems, kill wildlife, and cost billions of dollars to contain and clean.

By combining robotics with specialized materials, the research team aims to create a faster and safer way to remove oil from sensitive waterways without putting human responders at risk.
