Since women’s safety is a legitimate concern when it comes to ridesharing this is a good feature. You can request a female doctor over a male one so this is no different

  2. I think I’ve had a female driver 1 or 2 times in all the years I’ve been using uber

  3. Since this would restrict the earnings of a male Uber driver solely based upon their sex, this is most likely going to end up in quite a lawsuit.

  4. I think it’s so sad that we can’t trust men to act decently around women. That we need systems like this to protect them from being assaulted when trying to catch a taxi.

I use uber a fair bit. I’d like to see this available for men, too. I’d prefer to be able to pick a male driver over a female driver, if possible.

  6. China tried this and all the females got pissed ( both riders and drivers) and men were happy

  7. I usually get female drivers when I take a trip out to middle America. Northeast where I live, it’s 95% male.

  8. It’s sad that men don’t know how to behave around women. Every one deserves to feel safe.

I think this is in response to Waymo. Women riders don’t have to worry about gender dynamics when there’s no human driver.

I wonder how this will play out in South Asian and Middle Eastern countries where the share women drivers is far less than in America/Europe. It’s probably an even bigger concern in those regions too.

  11. It’s kind of nice Uber is offering so many additional services. We had a public assist the other day and redi-wheels wasn’t available after a set time. We looked for options for them and found Uber offers WAV vehicles (wheelchair accessible vehicles) at no extra cost of a normal UberX. Id venture to guess Uber must pay for these upgrades to people who qualify to add it to their van, otherwise why do it? They also offer car seat vehicles, bring your dog, or even deliver a package for you of 30 lbs or less.

I won’t be surprised at all when someone sues Uber for discrimination based on gender. Uber claims its drivers are contractors, not employees, so the arguement could be made that they are awarding/denying work solely based off of gender.

  13. Lyft has a pink ride option as well. But there are so few drivers it takes a lot longer.

Now that I think about it, just about every ride share driver I have ever come across was a man. I could probably count the number of female drivers on one hand.

  15. I drove Uber full time for a few months in 2019. At the airport there’s a queue lot for it — one of the men there talked about how he knows exactly where this hot girl lives, and he has a “map” of some of the the most attractive girls in the city.

Sometimes in the richer suburbs Saturday morning would be spent ferrying around 14-17 year old girls between each other’s houses.

Safety for women should definitely be a priority.

Don’t let your kids ride uber alone!

I’m not sure if this happens in the US but here in the UK a lot of times Uber will say it’s a woman and than a man turns up because they are account sharing

How do they avoid this from occuring?

  17. Only now?

Been a thing for a long time in Estonia with Bolt, women for women.

  18. Lmao so Reddit is the same as twitter now? 😂
    Outta here too smh. Insane

If this isn’t a condemnation of men in general, I don’t know what is.

We’re enabling this at a societal level.

  20. In my experience, there are probably something like 20 male Uber drivers to every one female driver. So are the passengers who request a female driver just going to wait ~20x longer for a ride? If so, will women actually use it?

  21. How bad does it have to be, for a company to implement that. Think about that before making any comment. And then think about how dificult it is in your own company to get one quality of life feature implemented. This must have been a massive problem otherwise they wouldn’t invest a penny.

It’s also letting female drivers avoid male passengers. I don’t think just the passengers want this

I thought transport segregation was struck down by the Supreme Court. I sense a future lawsuit.

Hey, if women feel safer doing this then I’m glad it’s an option.

  25. Whatever makes people feel as comfortable as possible, I can’t see as a bad thing. Might be longer wait times for women riders who opt into that option due to the sheer amount of men drivers but it is what it is
